Task 1
Your friend from another country is interested to visit your home town. write a letter to him. In your letter, you should:
· describe what is the best time to visit
· how he can enjoy his visit
· which places he may like to visit.
Dear Jim,
I hope you're well. I'm just writing to give you some information on my hometown since you're planning to visit next year.
Shanghai is located in east-central China, which is neither too hot in Summer, nor too cold in winter, but it rains a lot. I suggest you come in Spring, April or May if you like, to avoid the rainy season, considering its high humidity. Besides, during that time, there are always some special discounts on international flights and hotels, which can certainly save you a lot of money.
The metro system here is well developed so you can reach any popular attraction by metro instead of renting a car, as traffic is terrible around peak hours. You don't need to worry about the language. Most signs are written bilingually, by both English and Chinese, and you will find most staff in hospitality are able to offer help in English.
The city is full of surprises. It is one of the few cities in the world that evokes so much history, glamour, mystique and exotic promise in name alone. The top three tourists spots, I believe, are The Bund, Oriental Pearl TV Tower, and Yu Garden. If you have time, we can even go to Disneyland together.
Call me anytime if you ever need help.
Speak soon.
Jumpy
Task 2
In modern society, it is no longer necessary to slaughter animals for producing foodstuffs, or non-food products such as clothes or medicine. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
People have different views on animals slaughtering for human needs. I believe, while it is absolutely unnecessary to do that for clothes making, certain level of sacrifice from animals is still needed for the development of both individuals and society.
On the one hand, the brutal treatment on animals has made a very bad effect. In order to balance natural diversity, killing of rare species must be stopped. For example, the illegal trade of fur and ivory has put various plants and animals under the threat of extinction. To speak ethically, the lives of all creatures should be respected and humans have no right to subject animals to any kind of trauma. The video and live steam of livestocks being slaughtered often spreads very fast through internet, which is very likely to lead juveniles to violence or torture addiction.
On the other hand, I believe, human beings have to count on animals at least in the short time. The protein in meat helps provide energy and develop muscles especially for athletes. The technology in this modern society has not found a reliable alternative for this kind of nutrition. Similarly, animal experimentations are widely used to test new medicines before applying to human as it will be too risky to test on human body directly. It is the use of animals in medical research that accelerates the development of new drugs and medical procedure.
In conclusion, it seems to me that it would be wrong to completely ban animals killing until equally effective alternatives are developed.
