Task 1
Write a letter to your neighbor about the damage that occurred to your car while he was parking his car in the lane outside your home. In the letter, you should:
· describe the damage
· say how you feel about this problem
· suggest to him what actions he should take.
Dear Mr. Buffett,
I'm writing to complain about the damage you've caused to my car.
As you've noticed, you hit my car right in front of my house when you were parking yours in the lane last night. Besides several minor scratches, there is a conspicuous dent on the hood. Photos are attached for you to check.
I completely understand that you are a new driver who just got the driver license last week, and you didn't do that on purpose. But I do think you should be more careful when backing your car. Let me know if you find it hard to have someone to teach you.
Even though they are all minor damages, but I still need to pay the repair cost. Please send your insurance company information back to me or you can choose to compensate by your own. Estimated cost is attached as well.
I am looking forward to your prompt response.
Yours sincerely,
Jumpy Munger
Task 2
Nowadays there is a growing amount of advertising aimed at children. Some people think this has negative effects on children and should be banned. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is true that children have become the focus group of some advertisements. I completely agree that there should be some restrictions on those marketing materials.
On the one hand, advertisements regarding kids' needs are popular for some reasons. The market is full of various kinds of snacks and toys, and most parents feel overwhelmed with the complexity to choose the right products that their kids will like. Recommendations from posters, campaign videos can certainly help, with the information on nutrients in foods, or features of toys. TV commercials produced by learning machine companies might actually help youngsters gain interests in literacy and numeracy skills. It is the eagerness and willingness to learn that is going to drive them to excellence in the future.
On the other hand, however, the ultimate goal of commercials is to enlarge profits. Children at that age would not be able to know what they really need, which makes them much easier to target and to influence. Attracted by some funny ads, the littles ones are very likely to ask parents to buy for them even though it is too expensive to afford for poor families. Without getting what they want, children may start to show disrespect or become teenage rebels. The side effects of advertisements could literally destroy a happy family if the juveniles get involved in violence or even commit crimes.
In conclusion, while it is sometimes argued that commercials targeting at children are reasonable, I believe the negative effects are serious enough to have them banned.
