Lesson 68 Persistent

I crossed the street to avoid meeting him, but he saw me and came running towards me. It was no use pretending that I had not seen him, so I waved to him. I never enjoy meeting Nigel Dykes. He never has anything to do. No matter how busy you are, he always insists on coming with you. I had to think of a way of preventing him from following me around all morning.

'Hello, Nigel,' I said. 'Fancy meeting you here!'

'Hi, Elizabeth,' Nigel answered. ' I was just wondering how to spend the morning--until I saw you. You're not busy doing anything, are you?'

' No, not at all,' I answered.' I'm going to.. .'

'Would you mind my coming with you ?' he asked, before I had finished speaking.

‘ Not at all,' I lied, 'but I'm going to the dentist.'

' Then I'll come with you,' he answered.' There's always plenty to read in the 'waiting room!'

the word I'm learning from BBC:

quarry

Both meanings of quarry have to do with going after something. An animal being hunted is called quarry, and when you dig a hole in the earth looking for rocks, both the digging and the hole are called quarry as well.

Gross fact: Quarry derives from the Latin cor "heart," because hunters used to drape the entrails of their chosen quarry on their dogs' backs. The origin in a word for "heart" can help you remember both quarries: a rock quarry is searching down toward the heart of the earth; a stag's heart is considered a hunter's greatest prize.

persistent

If something is persistent, it just won't stop. If you're persistent in your suggestions for a trip to Mexico, maybe your parents will eventually give in and take you there.

Persistent comes from the Latin verb persistere which means "to continue with strength." A persistent salesman refuses to give up. A persistent ringing sound is one that repeats and repeats. Persistent rumors keep circulating, as does a persistent virus. Often something persistent is annoying. The related verb is persist, which means to continue to exist, or to go without stopping.

It was no use pretending that I had not seen him, so I waved to him.

Say the daughter of your favorite musician just enrolled at your school. If you just use her to get to meet her rock star dad, that's pretty unkind.

Use is an old word with a lot of, well, uses. You can use a bike to get to school, or use up an entire tube of toothpaste in one vigorous brushing session. You might have to show Grandma how to use the 3-in-1 remote control. As a noun use means "purpose." As a verb, use means either "put to work," or "work something until there isn't anything left," unless you use your friend, meaning you exploit her.

造个句:

It was no use lecturing my son, he won't listen.

No matter how busy you are, he always insists on coming with you.

To insist on something is to demand or swear to it. You can insist that you didn't eat the last piece of cake, and then insist that your brother show your mom the bits of frosting on his fingers.

The verb insist comes from the Latin insistere, meaning “persist,” “dwell upon,” or “stand on.” To insist on something, like a room with a view, is to say that you must have it. To insist that you never met that man before in your life — even though there's a picture of the two of you together — is to claim that you're telling the truth. To insist on tapping your foot on the chair leg is annoying.

Fancy meeting you here!

Fancy can be an adjective, noun, or a verb. As an adjective, it’s the opposite of plain. The noun names something that isn’t real. When someone likes or wants something, the verb can be used: “I fancy a cup of tea.” Doesn’t that sound fancy?

Fancy is an old contraction of the word fantasy. You’ll often see this word used in the phrase “flights of fancy.” This phrase refers to an unrealistic goal or idea such as, “He has flights of fancy about running off to Hollywood and becoming a movie star.” Fancy can also be used as an expression of affection. If you have a crush on someone, for instance, you could say that you “took a fancy” to him or her.

练习感悟:

1.今天ing特多,舌头辛苦了。回听时发现think发的音不够长;

When I gave first glance at the pictures of these two animals, I felt like ew...

but when I read more, I did feel intrigued by the interesting facts about them, and i started wondering who was going to win, especially with my son, he always finds fighting most interesting and is eager to know which one is more powerful and stronger, and of course, the most fun part for him is always who will win in the fighting. (I sometimes feel a little brutal and bloody)

My husband once said, it is a good way for us  to learn by reading with our son, it really is.

we appreciate we can take the journey to the unknown world with our son.

Interesting Cobra Facts:

Smallest species of cobra, Mozambique spitting cobra, is 4 feet long. Largest species is King Cobra. It weighs around 13 pounds and has 18 feet in length.

They can be green, brown, dark brown in color.

Cobra is famous for its hood, which is a flap of skin that can be spread when snake feels angry or threatened. Hood can scare predators and chase them away.

Snake charmers in Burma use cobras to entertain audience. Cobra respond well to visual stimulus and can be "trained" to show hood when it rise from the bag. Snake charmers remove venomous teeth to prevent bites. This tradition is illegal and inhumane for snakes.

Cobras produce large amount of venom. With just one bite, cobra can kill large elephant or 10-15 adult humans. Venomous fangs have half an inch in length.

Spitting cobras can spit their venom with incredible accuracy. They can align with predator's head and deliver venom right into eyes.

Antidote (substance that can reverse effect of the venom) is made of the same venom that induces intoxication.

Cobras eat lizards, frogs, birds, mammals, fish and other snakes.

They have excellent night vision and sense of smell, which they use to detect prey. Sense of smell is located on the tongue.

Their metabolism is very slow, so they need to eat every couple of months.

Like other snakes, they swallow their prey whole.

Group of cobras is called "quiver".

Cobras are the only snakes that show at least some sort of parental behavior. They build nest for their eggs and guard them until they hatch.

Females lay between 20-40 eggs. Incubation time (time until they hatch) lasts between 60-80 days.

Cobras live 20 years in the wild. They might live longer in captivity.
