afraid to something 用来谈论计划中要做，但又有危险或后果不好的事：

A lot of people are afraid to go out at night.

He was afraid to tell his parents about the broken window.

afraid of -ing 用来谈论我们并非计划要做，但可能会发生的不利于我们的事：

The path was icy, so we walked very carefully. We were afraid of falling.

I don't like dogs. I'm always afraid of being bitten.

So, you are afraid to do something because you are afraid of something happening as a result:

I was afraid to go near the dog because I was afraid of being bitten.

interested in doing 与 interested to do  比较：

I'm trying to sell my car but nobody is interested in buying it.

I was interested to hear that Diane has got a new job.
