Smash-and-grab
The expensive shops in a famous arcadenear Piccadillywere just opening. At this time of the morning, the arcade was almost empty. Mr. Taylor, the owner of a jewelleryshop was admiring a new window display. Two of his assistants had been working busily since eight o'clock and had only just finished.Diamond necklaces and ringshad been beautifully arranged on a background of blackvelvet. After gazing at the display for several minutes, Mr. Taylor went back into his shop.
The silence was suddenly brokenwhen a large car, with its headlightson and its horn blaring, roared down the arcade. It came to a stop outside the jeweller's. One man stayed at the wheel while two others with black stockings over their faces jumped out and smashed the window of the shop with iron bars. While this was going on, Mr. Taylor was upstairs. He and his staffbegan throwing furniture out of the window. Chairs and tables went flying into the arcade. One of the thieves was struck by a heavy statue, but he was too busy helping himself to diamonds to notice any pain. The raid was all over in three minutes, for the men scrambledback into the car and it moved off at a fantasticspeed. Just as it was leaving, Mr. Taylor rushed out and ran after it throwing ashtrays and vases, but it was impossible to stop the thieves. They had got away with thousands of pounds worth of diamonds.

Two of his assistants had been workingbusily since eight o'clock and had only just finished.本句运用了“过去完成进行时态”和“过去完成时态”，均表示work和finish两个动作发生在前一句was admiring动作之前，从而生动地描述事件发生前珠宝的状态。把握时态对于阅读理解和翻译都非常重要！！！

Chairs and tables went flying into the arcade： …flying into the arcade中的flying为现在分词，作伴随状语。
…but he was too busy helping himself to diamonds to notice any pain：里面有两个搭配：be busy doing sth.正忙于做某事；比如：I am busy doing my homework。我正忙于做作业。Help oneself to…窃取；随意拿取，此处to为介词, to+名词/名词性短语；比如：The two thieves broke into the shop and helped themselves to the stock.这两个小偷破门而入，随心所欲地窃取店里的货物。

Running after them, the owner threw ashtrays and vases, but the thieves got away, stealing thousands of pounds worth of diamonds.
