Chinese people are hiring others to consume tasty food on their behalf.
on one's behalf:
If you love eating and drinking for free and are looking to make some pocket money, there's a job in China with your name on it. A new type of online service allows people to hire others to eat or drinktheir favorite treats, either to cure their boredom or satisfy their cravings without the calories that usually come with it.
sth with your name on it:
treat: 熟词僻义 〔尤指不经常吃的〕美味食物 eg: The cafe serves an assortment of gourmet treats.
boredom: n.
craving: n. 渴求;想要 [+ for ] eg: She had a craving for some chocolate.
Chinese media recently reported on an increasingly popular service on online platform Taobaothat's as mind-boggling as it is intriguing. People can now go online and hire others to consume certain foods and drinks, and ask them to provide video evidence of them eating or drinking the said treats.
an increasing popular sth:
as mind-boggling as it is intriguing. :as A as it is B: That job is demanding as it is rewarding:
mind-bogging: ['maind,bɔɡliŋ] adj.
intriguing: /ɪnˈtriːɡɪŋ/ adj.
吃; 喝 eg: Martha would consume nearly a pound of cheese per day.
Fees usually range from two to nine yuan($0.30 - $1.35) plus the cost of the food. It's not exactly a get-rich-quick job, but there are quite a lot of people willing to do it for the free treats alone.
range from sth to sth: 包括〔各种不同的人或物〕eg: The show had a massive audience, ranging from children to grandparents.
"Bubble tea drinking" is a particularly popular service, as the chewy tapioca balls and poppingboba drink is all the rage in Asia these days, but there are also ads from people willing to eat fried chicken or hot pot for anyone willing to pay for them.
chewy: adj.
tapioca: n.
be all the rage: to be very popular and fashionable
One seller in Harbin, Heilongjiang province in Northeastern China, sent a journalist from PearVideo several videos of a grape-flavored bubble tea from different angles, along with a short essay describing its taste.
"The crisp and chewy textures meld together...the deep purple grapes taste sweet and rich. I like to use a straw to drink the ice cream topping which is light and refreshing, with a faint milky aroma."
rich: adj.
refreshing: adj. /rɪˈfrɛʃɪŋ/ 使人感到清爽的; 使人精神恢复的 eg: Herbs have been used for centuries to make refreshing drinks.
aroma: n. /əˈrəʊmə/ 芳香;香味 the aroma of fresh coffee 新鲜咖啡的香味
Other sellers explained that most customers buy their service because they're bored at night or trying to shake off cravings while they're on a diet. Drinking bubble tea by proxy may help customers avoid high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and other health problems that the sugar-laden drink may cause, sellers said.
shake off: V..
On a diet: 节食
proxy: n. /ˈprɒksɪ/ 〔由个人委托的〕代理人 [+ for ] eg: a husband acting as proxy for his wife 代表妻子的丈夫
sugar-laden: adj.
So why would anyone pay a total stranger to indulge in a treat rather than consume it themselves? Well, apparently, the online service is so cheap that some people simply do it out of boredom, while others get satisfaction from watching others enjoy their favorite treats.
indulge: ~ in sth | ~ yourself (with sth) 沉湎,沉迷,沉溺(于…)eg: They went into town to indulge in some serious shopping.
do sth out of (some reason):
get satisfaction from : 从...
This indulging-by-proxy service has received a lot of attention on social media in China, withsome people describing it as the job of their dreams, and others suggesting similar compensation for sleeping on the client's behalf.
received a lot of attention on social media:在社交网络上获得很多关注。
compensation :n. /ˌkɒmpɛnˈseɪʃən/ 补偿费,赔偿金 eg: compensation for injuries at work 工伤补偿金

"Finally, the job meant for me," someone else wrote.
