    To the Editor

You have just read an article in an international travel magazine which contained some information about your town that is incorrect.
Write a letter to the editor of the magazine. In your letter
-correct the information in the article
-explain why it is important for the magazine to give correct information
-suggest what the magazine should do about this situation

    Dear sir or madam,

The latest edition of your travel magazine included an article about Cambridge, but this contained incorrect information. The writer described the University of Cambridge as being the oldest in the world whereas in fact the oldest university in the English-speaking world is in Oxford. The University of Cambridge was founded in 1209, but Oxford was known to have existed in 1096.

A magazine such as yours has an international reputation and is extremely influential with travel companies and individuals alike. It is essential that any information published should be accurate and reliable and I was genuinely surprised that the facts had not been checked prior to publication.

I feel that the least the magazine can do is to publish a correction and an apology in next month’s magazine. I would also urge you to ensure that all factual information is thoroughly checked before publication.

    Yours faithfully,

    Alan Watson

    Notes:

    To Neighbors

Your neighbors have recently written to you to complain about the noise from your house/flat.
Write a letter to your neighbors. In your letter

-explain the reasons for the noise
    -apologize
-describe what action you will take

    Write at least 150 words
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
    Begin your letter as follows:
    Dear _______,

    Dear James,

I was very shocked to get your letter saying that the noise from my flat has been spoiling your evenings and causing you some distress. I am really, really sorry about that. I had no idea that you would be able to hear so much, so I hope you will accept my apologies.

As you may have guessed, I am trying to refit my kitchen in the evenings when I get home from work. Unfortunately it is all taking longer than expected and I have been having problems with getting things to fit properly. This has meant a lot of banging and hammering.

As the kitchen is still not finished, I have decided to call in a professional builder who will finish the work in the next day or two. He'll work only during daytime hours, so you won't be disturbed in the evenings again, I promise.

Sorry to have caused these problems.

    Bill

    Notes:
The writer apologized for banging and hammering for kitchen refit work because the noise has been spoiling neighbors' evenings and causing them distress. The later work will be only conducted during daytime hours.

    To Friend

You want to sell some of your furniture. You think a friend of yours might like to buy it from you. Write a letter to your friend. In you letter:
    -explain why you are selling
    -describe the furniture
-suggest a date when your friend can come and see the furniture

    Dear Jan,

As you know, we'll be moving to a new house soon and there are a few things that I won't be able to take with me. The new house is a bit smaller so I have to sell some furniture and I was wondering if you might be interested?

In particular I want to sell my big dining table. Do you remember it - the one in the living room? It has wooden legs and a grey glass top and it's big enough for six people. There are six matching chairs to go with it.

I know you've always like this furniture so I could let you have it at a good price. I'd rather sell it to you than to a stranger!

Why don't you come around and take another look at them on Saturday? We'll be here all day, so maybe we could have some lunch together?

Give me a ring and let me know.

    Love,

    Shanda

    Notes:
Due to the smaller house the writer is moving in, the big dining table won't be taken, instead, could be sold to a friend.

    To Landlord

You and your family are living in rented accommodation in an English-speaking country. You are not satisfied with the condition of some of the furniture.
Write a letter to the landlord. In your letter:

    -introduce yourself
-explain what is wrong with the furniture
-say what action you would like the landlord to take

    Dear Mr.Smith,

I am your tenant from Flat 3 on Riverside Street. We met each other when I signed the rental agreement in your office.

I have lived here for 6 months now and I am writing to complain about some of the furniture. As you many remember, the dining table is in very poor condition and has uneven legs. It also does not match the dining chairs as these are too low to be comfortable for a table of that height. When I first pointed this out to you, you agreed to provide a brand new dining set. However, you have not done so and I would really like to resolve this matter as soon as possible.

If it is more convenient for you, perhaps you could simply replace the table by finding one of a suitable height for the chairs. This would solve the problems without too much cost, so I hope you agree to this proposed solution.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

    Yours sincerely,

    M.M.Egil

    Notes:
The dining set is complaint in this letter and the writer proposed a solution. The table is in very poor condition and has uneven legs, failing to match dining chairs height.

    To Friend

A friend has agreed to look after your house and pet while you are on holiday.
Write a letter to your friend. In your letter

    • give contact details for when you are away
    • give instructions about how to care for your pet
    • describe other household duties

    Dear Carolyn,

Thank you for agreeing to house-sit for me. If you need to contact me during my holiday, I’ll be staying at the Imperial Hotel in Bundaberg. If it’s urgent, however, please ring my mobile phone, which I’ll keep with me at all times. I’ve written the numbers on a sticky note which I’ve left on the fridge.

My cat needs to be fed twice daily so each morning and evening put a handful of cat biscuits in his dish. You will find these in the kitchen pantry. Also, please check throughout the day to make sure he has fresh water. You can give him a small bowl of milk in the evening.

I would like you to water my plants, too. The indoor ones in the lounge only need water once every few days but the plants on the balcony need to be watered daily unless there has been heavy rain. Finally, for security, please clear my mail box every day and keep the outside lights on at night.

I look forward to seeing you on my return.

    Yours,

    Katie
