[答] A few years ago,at my first Science Bowl practice,I first realized that the different fields of science are intricately intertwined. It was initially shocking to hear a teammate explain the answer to a biology question in terms of chemistry. After I asked why the question was not in the chemistry Science Bowl category,he replied,“It's both biology AND chemistry. Many questions are like that-you can look at the same concept from different scientific perspectives.”In later Science Bowl practices, it was exhilarating to learn that geologists could deduce a mineral's properties by analyzing the chemistry of the atomic bonds, biologists might explain the metabolic process by referencing the laws of thermodynamics taught in physics classes, and computer scientists can apply principles of quantum mechanics to create quantum computers.
As I progressed further through high school,I found that these inspiring connections were not limited to the sciences. For instance, the mathematical principles of geometry are prevalent in the artwork of M.C. Escher. The growth of j azz music during the Roaring Twenties helped expand and solidify modern American culture after World War I. Rachel Carson observed the chemical nature of the pesticide DDT,understood its ability to spread geologically through soils and waterways, noticed the resulting damage caused to biological ecosystems, and wrote the classic nonfiction book Silent Spring, which helped launch the environmental movement that prompted the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). I developed a new attitude towards education: one cannot truly appreciate a subject without understanding how it relates to other subjects. Thus,to further satisfy my love for the sciences,I eagerly delved into other classes that I had previously found uninteresting. With a heightened appreciation for science,I look forward to future Science Bowl practices, where I will encounter even more insightful relationships.
        2.写一封短信给你未来的室友,以便你的室友和我们从中能更好地来了解你。
[答] While I was packing my suitcase for the Stanford University Mathematics Camp, I was looking forward to a month away from home. I wanted to temporarily leave behind my old friends and my old life, ready to meet new people and try new activities. Yet,I could not bear to part with certain things.
I packed my piano sheet music, still unsure if I would have opportunities to practice, but dreading the nightmare of having access to a piano without pieces to learn. I lose myself in the music each time I sit at the piano bench. When I feel tired and need a break from study,I migrate over to my piano and enter a world filled with arpeggios and chromatic scales,a world where my emotions flow through my fingers and into the air.
I packed my swim trunks, goggles, and dragsuit. I love the water for its defiance of“land”physics. Weightlessness, amplified drag forces, the rush of water past the body with every pull-these phenomena all contribute to the magical quality of swimming. After workouts, I feel strengthened and energized.
I packed my drawing pencils and sketchpad, wanting to capture the special moments spent with my new friends. I prefer art to photography: the artist can choose what to emphasize or omit, better depict action and emotion with varying textures and line strokes, and make the scene more personal by adding abstract elements. Drawing is my way of remembering and telling stories of cherished times.
I packed my Rubik's cubes, counting on them to relieve boredom or pass time. When I am waiting in line or walking long distances,my mind busies itself with speedcubing. People often inquire why I enjoy solving the same cube hundreds of times. It is for the same reason why people play tennis or chess or golf-every solution is different and engages the mind in a unique manner.
My passions always remain with me,even in new environments. I will always pack my passions in my suitcase,no matter where life's journey leads. My roommate, what would you pack?
        3.你在乎什么,为什么?
[答] I was seven years old when I first visited the Texas A&M University Chemistry Open House,an annual public event featuring demos, interactive exhibitions, and lectures. I watched with amazement as a green froth rose from a large graduated cylinder like a dragon leaving its nest. Drawn into science,I went home that day full of questions and excitement. Throughout my life, I have had many similar learning opportunities created by volunteers sharing their undying passion with others. Demonstrations at the A&M  Physics Festival introduced me to the wonders of electricity and astronomy, the Olympic gold medalist Jason Lezak improved my stroke in a swim clinic, and a Van Cliburn Competition medalist enhanced my musicality in a piano master class.          Each of these activities has added dimension to my life. The African proverb,“it takes a village to raise a child,”surely rings true. I strive to give back to the village that supports me to this day. I was volunteering as a timer at a swim meet when a nervous six-year-old boy approached me, asking if he was in the correct lane ; I asked for his name and confirmed that he was.
He then muttered,“It's my first time... I don't know what to do...”
As I helped him put on his cap,I told him,“I was nervous at my first race too, but after I dove in, it was just like practice.”
The starter blew a long whistle and I urged the boy along. With my assurance,he bravely stepped on the starting block. I cheered for him through the entire race, and after I helped him out of the pool, his eyes were beaming with pride. He had won his heat and was given a small Heat Winner ribbon. I was congratulating him when he pressed the ribbon into my hand and said,“Thank you for helping me.”Throughout my life I have myself accumulated many similar ribbons and buttons, the majority of which have been pushed into obscurity in my room, but the ribbon I received that day is still proudly displayed,a reminder of the joys of contributing to my village.

        说实话,英文一句都看不懂,不过大家可以从中感受下美国的大学是如何选人。
