读书笔记0217《光荣与梦想-The glory and the

打卡 第六天，kindle的阅读进度是1211/29553（四本），

终于看到罗斯福出场了，终于看到希望。

记录如下：

1.  “Like the Insull machinations, tax dodges were legal. But despite the tax legislation of the time, some men had crossed into criminal territory.”

machinations是诡计，阴谋之意，我还以为是机器呢。意思是dodge逃避的意思，lusull是啥意思？我查不到。 

2.  “After all the moving eulogies had been delivered, it turned out that the king had been a common thief, guilty of swindling, fraud, and forging Italian government bonds. Among other things he had stolen over three hundred million dollars from trusting investors.”

eulogy：a formal expression of praise（或者 for someone who has died recently），颂词、悼词。common thief：惯犯，猜是这个意思。swindling：欺骗和偷，forge：伪造make a copy of with the intent to deceive，还有别的意思，如锻造。

3. “shatter、lose ground、uncomely、acceptance speech、conviction”

    shatter：粉碎break into many pieces。

    lose ground：失去地盘， 失利。

    uncomely：not in keeping with accepted standards of what is right or proper in polite     society，不优美的，不体面的，没礼貌的，不恰当的

   acceptance speech: 字面上理解就是获得之后的感言。

   conviction有两个意思：定罪，坚信
