Changes in Reading Habits
What are the implications of the way we read today?
Paragraph 1
Look around on your next plane trip. The iPad is the new pacifier for babies and toddlers. Younger school-aged children read stories on smartphones; older kids don’t read at all, but hunch over video games.Parents and other passengers read on tablets or skim a flotilla of email and news feeds. Unbeknown to most of us, an invisible, game-changing transformation links everyone in this picture; the neuronal circuit that underlines the brain’s ability to read is subtly, rapidly changing and this has implications for everyone from the pre-reading toddler to the expert adult.

平时我们用的比较多的其实是unknown，只不过unbeknown会更加正式，但需要注意，它们的词性有一点区别。
①unknown做副词的时候，和unbeknown同意，且用法相同，即unknown/unbeknown to sb. “不为某人所知的”。
② unknown还可以做形容词，译为“未知的”。
常用搭配：
remain unknown 仍然不明
For some unknown reason, … 不知何故，……
an unknown number of… ……数量不详
an unknown quantity 未知的人/物
③ unknown还可以做名词，译为“无名小卒；未知因素；不明的情况”。

[词根] vis-源于拉丁语，动词，同英语的see，译为“看见”。

词根vis-和vid-在拉丁语里同为“看见”。凯撒大帝在泽拉战役中打败本都国王法尔纳克二世之后写给罗马元老院的著名捷报——“Veni, vidi, vici.”(I came, I saw, I conquered.) “我来，我见，我征服。”
[词缀] in-源于拉丁语，做前缀时可译为“在里面；在…上；依靠；不”，在辅音字母前常见的变形如下：
① 在l前，in-变为il-，如illegal（adj.非法的），illustration（n.插图；例证；说明）；
②在b, m, p之前，in-变为im-，如imbalance（n.不均衡；失衡），immutable（adj.不可改变的），impending（adj.即将发生的，迫在眉睫的）；
③ 在r前，in-变为ir-，如irrevocable（adj.不可改变的；不可反转的）；
④ 在g前，in-变为i-，如ignore（v. 驳回诉讼；忽视）。
[词缀]–able/-ible/-ile源于拉丁语，通常作为形容词后缀，意为capable of，“能做…的；易做…的”。如portable（adj.可携带的；手提式的）。
invisible: in+vis+ible 不+看见+能做…的→“看不见的”
