（杨老师SAT阅读笔记）索杰纳·特鲁思（Sojourner Truth) 《难道俺不是个女人么？》( Ain't I a Woman?)

一名被辗转贩卖易主4次的美国女黑奴，最终成为一名废奴主义者，女权主义者和平权倡导者。

一名文盲，她却在全美妇女代表大会上以一篇短短的演讲而名留青史。

她就是索杰纳特鲁斯。这篇演讲就叫《难道俺不是个女人么？》

“喂，孩子们，哪里有牢骚，哪里就有不妥。俺寻思，那是南方的黑鬼和北方的女人都在议论权利。很快，白大老爷们儿就都快坐不住了。可咱在这儿唠些啥呢？”

" Well , children, where there is so much racket there must be something out of kilter. I think that 'twixt the negroes of the South and the women of the North, all talking about rights, the white men will be in a fix pretty soon. But what's all this here talking about? "

当白人女性为自己的权利奋争并已经获得某些权利的时候，黑人女性并不在她们考虑的范围之内：

"那边那位爷们儿说了，女人上车得别人帮着，过沟壑也得别人抱过去，去到哪都有最好的位置。没人帮俺上过车，没人抱俺趟过泥潭，也没人把好位置让过给俺。难道俺不是个女人么？"

That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud-puddles, or gives me any best place! And ain't I a woman?

即便是女汉子，也无法享受汉子的待遇：

“瞅瞅俺！瞅瞅俺的手臂！俺又会犁地又会种地，还会收谷入仓。爷们儿都赶不上俺。难道俺不是个女人么？”

"Look at me! Look at my arm! I could have ploughed and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And ain't I a woman? "

"俺干活吃饭都和爷们儿一样多-拿得到手的话-而且挨鞭子也一样多。难道俺不是个女人么？"

"I could work as much and eat as much as a man—when I could get it—and bear the lash as well! And ain't I a woman? "

以“母性”去打动女人的心是最有效的：

"俺生了13个孩子，亲眼看着他们多数被卖为奴。俺身为娘亲眼都哭瞎了，只有耶稣听到俺。难道俺不是个女人么？"

"I have borne thirteen children, and seen them most all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother's grief, none but Jesus heard me! And ain't I a woman?"

不给女人平等待遇，向来就是男权世界的“只许州官放火，不许百姓点灯”：

“而他们脑子里在琢磨着这事儿；他们叫它什么来着？（有人耳语说叫有文化。）” 宝贝，就是它。它跟女人和黑鬼的权利有啥关系？俺的杯子要是只能盛半杯，你的能盛满杯，你连半杯都不让我有，那也太缺德了吧？"

"Then they talk about this thing in the head; what's this they call it? [Intellect, somebody whispers] That's it, honey. What's that got to do with women's rights or negroes' rights? If my cup won't hold but a pint, and yours holds a quart, wouldn't you be mean not to let me have my little half measure-full?"

连耶稣都有圣母玛利亚，何况凡夫俗子？

“那边那位穿黑衣裳的爷们儿说了，女人不能和男人有同样的权利，因为耶稣不是女人。你的耶稣是从哪里出来的？你的耶稣是从哪里出来的？是从上帝和一名女人那里来的！他跟男人没半毛钱关系！”

"Then that little man in black there, he says women can't have as much rights as men, 'cause Christ wasn't a woman! Where did your Christ come from? Where did your Christ come from? From God and a woman! Man had nothing to do with Him."

“风水轮流转”，“三十年河西”以后，该轮到“三十年河东狮吼”了吧？

“上帝创造的第一个女人凭一己之力就可反转地球，这帮女人在一起应该可以把它反转过来，让它的正方再次朝上！”

"If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back, and get it right side up again!"

"现在她们已经在呼吁这么干了，大老爷们儿最好让着她们点。"

"And now they is asking to do it, the men better let them."

“多谢大家听俺唠叨，俺索杰纳老太婆没啥要说的啦。”

"Obliged to you for hearing me, and now old Sojourner ain't got nothing more to say."

这是激进版本的《黑奴吁天录》。它让我联想到中国农民诗人余秀华和她的诗句：

“那些在我心脏上掏煤的人仓皇逃出

水就涌进来

黑就成为白”

Do you realize that inno other country in the world with democratic tendencies is suffrage so completely denied as in a considerable number of our own states? There are thirteen black states where no suffrage for women exists, and fourteen others where suffrage for women is more limited than in many foreign countries.

Do you realize that when you ask women to take their cause to state referendum you compel them to do this: that you drive women of education, refinement, achievement, to beg men who cannot read for their political freedom?

Do you realize that such anomalies as a college president asking her janitor to give her a vote are overstraining the patience and driving women to desperation?

Do you realize that women in increasing numbers indignantly resent the long delay in their enfranchisement?

Your party platforms have pledged women suffrage. Then why not be honest, frank friends of our cause, adopt it in reality as your own, make it a party program, and "fight with us"? As a party measure—a measure of all parties—why not put the amendment through Congress and the legislatures? We shall all be better friends, we shall have a happier nation, we women will be free to support loyally the party of our choice, and we shall be far prouder of our history.

"There is one thing mightier than kings and than Congresses and  political parties—"the power of an idea when its time has come to move." The time for woman suffrage has come. The woman's hour has struck. If parties prefer to postpone action longer and thus do battle with this idea, they challenge the inevitable. The idea  will not perish; the party which opposes it may. Every delay, every tiick, every political  dishonesty from now on will antagonize the women of the land more and more, and when the party or parties which have so delayed woman suffrage finally let it come, their sincerity will be doubted and their appeal to the new voters will be met with suspicion. This is the psychology of the situation. Can you afford the risk? Think it over.
