The hallmark of originality is rejecting the default and exploring whether a better option exists. I’ve spent more than a decade studying this, and it turns out to be far less difficult than I expected.
1.hallmark:特点,标志,an idea, method, or quality that is typical of a particular person or thing.
The explosion had all the hallmarks of a terrorist attack.
The starting point is curiosity: pondering why the default exists in the first place. We’re driven to question defaults when we experience vuja de, the opposite of déjà vu. Déjà vu occurs when we encounter something new, but it feels as if we’ve seen it before. Vuja de is the reverse—we face something familiar, but we see it with a fresh perspective that enables us to gain new insights into old problems.
3.ponder why…:ponder的意思为仔细考虑,深思,to spend time thinking carefully and seriously about a problem, a difficult question, or something that has happened,是个可以替换consider的比较正式的说法。
ponder后面常与how/what/why/whether连接使用,作句子的跟随状语。
Jay stood still for a moment, pondering whether to go or not.
4.driven sb to do sth:促使/驱使某人做某事,to strongly influence someone to do something.
例句:The detective wondered what had driven Christine to phone her.
5.xx is the reverse:想表达“xx就完全不一样了”除了用xx is completely different还可以用到这个简洁的用法。
reverse表示正相反,the exact opposite of what has just been mentioned.
例句:I didn’t mean to insult her - quite the reverse (=in fact, I meant to praise her) .
The loan enabled Jan to buy the house.
7.gain new insights into old problems:
