The hallmark of originality is rejecting the default and exploring whether a better option exists. I’ve spent more than a decade studying this, and it turns out to be far less difficult than I expected.
1.hallmark：特点，标志，an idea, method, or quality that is typical of a particular person or thing.可以与feature做同义替换。
例句：The explosion had all the hallmarks of a terrorist attack. 这起爆炸事件具有恐怖袭击的所有特征。
2.far less…：文中表达“没那么难”，没有用not that等，而是用了far less difficult, 表达出“远没有/差得远”的意思。
The starting point is curiosity: pondering why the default exists in the first place. We’re driven to question defaults when we experience vuja de, the opposite of déjà vu. Déjà vu occurs when we encounter something new, but it feels as if we’ve seen it before. Vuja de is the reverse—we face something familiar, but we see it with a fresh perspective that enables us to gain new insights into old problems.
3.ponder why…：ponder的意思为仔细考虑，深思，to spend time thinking carefully and seriously about a problem, a difficult question, or something that has happened，是个可以替换consider的比较正式的说法。
ponder后面常与how/what/why/whether连接使用，作句子的跟随状语。
比如说：Jay stood still for a moment, pondering whether to go or not. 杰伊静静地站了一会儿，琢磨着要不要去。
4.driven sb to do sth：促使/驱使某人做某事，to strongly influence someone to do something.
例句：The detective wondered what had driven Christine to phone her. 警探不明白是什么原因促使克里斯蒂娜打电话给她。
5.xx is the reverse：想表达“xx就完全不一样了”除了用xx is completely different还可以用到这个简洁的用法。
reverse表示正相反，the exact opposite of what has just been mentioned.
例句：I didn’t mean to insult her - quite the reverse (=in fact, I meant to praise her) . 我没想侮辱她——其实我是想赞扬她。
6.enable：表示使发生，使可能，这个词属于知道它的意思，但平时不会想到用，其实enable是个很简洁好用的词。
比如说：The loan enabled Jan to buy the house. 贷款使简有能力买下这房子。
7.gain new insights into old problems：这个短语可以直接背下来，表示从老问题中找到新观点。
