Notes from Lu Haiyun’s lecture “Personalization is NOT about Getting Personal”.

What is personalization?

Personalization is to utilize all possible opportunities to get to know the people you are with.

Purpose: To connect, to engage, to go beyond.

How well do you know me? From 0~10.

Activity: teacher says facts about herself, students write down “not at all, neutral, very much” according to how much they have in common.

Facts can be: I love reading Kungfu novels.I love long silent hikes in nature. I have siblings. I experienced earthquake…

After the activity, students will better know the teacher.

That’s why we should do personalization in class.(Reflection: Affect Filter Theory)

Seven Ways to Do Personalization in Class

1. Student Interests Inventory.

Every time you teach a new class, you can give them a specially designed worksheet of student interests inventory, to better understand your students. (PDF document in class handouts for reference.)

Don’t forget to number the worksheets. E.g., 1,2,…

When you see impressive statements in the inventory, you can share them in class, and ask circling questions and exploratory questions.

You can also do activity of four squares, assigning four corners in classroom to engage the whole class.

2. Personalization Walk.

With the inventory, you can also do personalization walk activity. Choose several students each time.

Teacher pastes the stickers in classroom, and students interview each other to find out which student the sticker is describing.

Set a time limitation, make it like a race, so students will be fully engaged.

3. Special Person Interview.

During the first 10~15 minutes in your class, ask a student to sit in front and ask him/her questions. (PDF document in class handouts for reference.)

Questions can include: What’s your name? How old are you? What is your family like? Which instrument do you play? What is your favorite food/color…? What are you scared of? When you grow up, what do you want to be? …

4. Personalized Stories with a Celebrity.

These 4 questions are reasonably designed.No.1 is to set a character. No.2 is to set a place. No.3 is to set a conflict. No.4 is to find a solution.

How to do activity after students write down their answers?

Go through students’ answers and use the most dramatic or impressive answers.

OR ask students to exchange cards and write down their stories.

5. Movement PQA.

PQA=personalized questions & answers

It can be used in everything, including sports, foods, school, classes, families, travel, injuries…

E.g., Injuries.

If you broken your arm before, step forward/backward...

If you got a bean stuck in your ear, step forward…

6. Exit Tickets.

You can do this activity 5 mins before class is over.
