Simon有话说
What's your favourite childhood memory?
As adults, our lives may look very similar, even though we are in different countries and cultures.
We are married (or not). We go to work, or business. We live in a city. We spend most of our time in front of a screen, big or small.
But what about when we were 8?
Or 5?
Or 3?
(Ok, I can't really remember when I was 3)
Here are a few of my favourite childhood memories. I think they will be different from your childhood memories, so I'm interested to hear from you. Please add my public wechat account and let me know your favourite childhood memories. I'll be extra happy if you include a picture!

1. Visiting Mount Donald MacLean
Near the Wild West coast of Auckland is a hill called Mount Donald MacLean. At the foot of the hill is a building called a bach , pronounced “batch”. It's a very old house that belonged to our family friend.
There was no power, and running water came from a pump. Outside was grass, bush, an old rusty skeleton of a tractor, and a beautiful view of the Manukau heads.
As a child, I never noticed the things that weren't there – power, TV, etc. I noticed the family time, the dinners cooked in the fireplace, the sense of adventure.
2. Spending time with my grandparents
People say I am like my granddad. He liked everybody, and everybody liked him. Spending time with Granddad and Grace (my mother’s stepmother) was always fun, full of good feelings and interesting stories.
Now that I am old enough to be an uncle in others’ lives, I understand what it is to just BE someone special in a person’s life. It’s not really what you say, or what you do, but how you do all of those things.
My grandfather died when I was 12. My older boy cousin cried so much during his funeral. I think everyone missed him very much.
3. Friendly cats on the way to and from school
Cats just like some people. I am one of those people. When I used to walk to school, this little tabby cat would try to follow me. He was very friendly, so I called him … guess what? “Friendly” became his name.
Every day he would wait for me as I walked to school, and I would spend a few moments stroking him before continuing my journey. Of course, he wanted to follow me, but I had to say to him “no, Friendly, you must stay here”. But I was very happy he wanted to follow me.
As I think about it, another reason I like this memory is that I had plenty of time to talk with a cute cat. I didn’t have to rush, rush, rush all the time …
Maybe that’s the very thing we all miss from our childhood.
What’s your favourite childhood memory?
