Sleuths, drugs and rock'n'roll. Sherlock combined period drama, feminism and a fiendish whodunit into a feature-length comeback that got 2016 off to a flying start – often quite literally, as our hero soared in aeroplanes and plummeted down waterfalls. If there's a superior 90 minutes of television this year, then we're in for a treat.

Expected to draw blockbuster ratings of 13million, making it the most-watched programme of the festive period, this was genuine"event TV"— getting a simultaneous release in cinemas and the United States.

Holmes for the holidays: Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch in the BBC's special Victorian episode of Sherlock
The superbly stylish one-off special saw Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch, all cheekbones and arched fingers) and Watson (a luxuriantly bewhiskered Martin Freeman) travel back to 1895 to battle the ghostly"Abominable Bride"— a dead woman in a wedding dress, prowling the streets of London with murder in mind.

Watson's wife Mary (Amanda Abbingdon) sported a snazzy pair of tweed breeches and was quietly resourceful, forming a second"Holmes and Watson"double act with Sherlock's brother Mycroft (co-creator Mark Gatiss, wearing a fat suit and scoffing plum pudding). After a sedately atmospheric start, this dazzling adventureunfolded like an origami swan of surprises. The ghostly bride represented the invisible army of women, rising up to claim the vote and wreak vengeance on abusive men.

The Victorian setting was all a drug trip in the mind of modern-day Holmes, who'd deliberately overdosed and entered his hallucinogenic"mind palace"to prove that arch foe Moriarty (Andrew Scott, chewing scenery and spitting his lines with relish) couldn't have come back from the dead. It was also a metaphor for Sherlock's addiction – to puzzles, as much as that seven per cent solution of cocaine.

The fever dream plot had more twists than a string of fairy lights. The playfully witty script packed in references to both the original stories and modern-day series.

Cumberbatch recently admitted he was concerned about fans'reaction to the characters stepping back in time. He needn't have worried.
