Summary of chapter 7
X-raying a Book
What’s the book aboutas a whole?
Thefour rulesstated in chapter 6 and 7 will help you find the answers .The four rulesisthe first stage of analytical reading. Following the four rules, you will grasp the theme and the structure of a book. Here are the four rules.
rule 1 : You must know what kind of book you are reading, and you should know this as early in the process as possible, preferably before you begin to read.
rule 2: State the unity of the whole book in a single sentence, or at most a few sentences (a short paragraph).
rule 3:Set forth the major parts of the book, and show how these are organized into a whole, by being ordered to one another and to the unity of the whole.
rule 4: Find out what the author’s problems were.
The author tells us that the four rules are connected and form a group of rules which have a single aim.Although you could find the outline from the author of a book, you’d better make your outline. Only in this way, you could understand the theme clearly, or you are in the risk of knowing the theme, but not understanding.
Rule 4 could also help you discover the theme and structure of a book by asking theoretical and practical questions like:
- Does something exist?
- What kind of thing is it?
- What caused it to exit?
- Why does it exit?
- what ends should be sought?
- What means should be chosen to a give end?
...
