Topic:You know you want to go into engineering and science, but you also want to keep your options open. The ECOES(Exploring Career Options in Engineering & Science) program allows you to explore all of them. Tour several cutting-edge engineering disciplines while working alongside our world-renowned faculty in the lab, designing your own engineering project.
My interest in engineering is rooted in my embracement of practicability and creativeness. I enjoy exploring new things and materializing what is in my mind. When I was a little girl, my parents bought me Lego and I could stay with them for a whole day. Until now, I still keep many Lego at home. My special love in computer science engineering might start from the frequent disconnections of Wi-Fi in our house and the consequently loss of files in the computer. In a long period of time, I insisted that I can deal with all these things if I learn computer science.
Though the beginning of my computer science journey sounds naive, I already had my first step out in my dream area. I took AP Computer Science in my junior year to learn the fundamental knowledge. I learn video editing from Adobe's online tutorials and posted my works on the Internet. I read books in computer science to improve my skill such as OCA (Oracle Certified Associate) Study Guide of Java SE 8 Programmer I and Computer System and Internet Technology. I gained insights on introduction of computer hardware, software and the Internet.
I also pay attention to cultivate my hands-on ability which is another necessary skill for a professional engineer, especially through my physics class. I once created a catapult with my group members. We adjusted the position of bungee to increase the force which could allow the ball to go further. We also added an extra wood to extend the position of lever arm so that we could get a more prefect parabola. We finally got second place in our class by casting 5.86 meters. All group members were encouraged and we even proposed a better plan to advance our work.
In my spare time, art, volunteer and travel are the biggest source of my relaxation and happiness. I enjoy playing the piano, clarinet, harmonica and doing Latin dance. I go to the animal shelter every month and volunteer to take care of them. I like traveling. I have a world map on my wall to circle the countries I’ve been and a special hard drive to store the pictures of people’s life. These activities and experiences enrich my life and allow me to notice more connection of art and technology in the daily life, such as AirPods.
I want to spend my summer in SIT majorly because this program allows me to design my own engineering project so that I can my classroom knowledge in the reality. This program is temping to me also because of my diversity interest in general engineering areas. I hope this program can help me know more about subjects other than computer science to determine my true love.
