①Dickie disliked snobs intensely.②Though he owned a large car, he hardly ever used it,preferring always to go on foot.③Even when it was raining heavily, he refused to carry an umbrella.④One day, he walked into an expensive shop after having been caught in a particularly heavy shower.⑤He wanted to buy a £300 watch for his wife, but he was in sucha bedraggled condition that an assistant refused to serve him.⑥Dickie left the shop without a word and returned carrying a large cloth bag.⑦As it was extremely heavy, he dumped it on the counter.⑧The assistant asked him to leave, but Dickie paid no attention to him and requested to see the manager.⑨Recognizingwho the customer was, the manager was most apologetic and reprimanded the assistant severely.⑩When Dickie was given the watch, he presented the assistant with the cloth bag.⑪It contained £300 in pennies.⑫He insisted on the assistant's counting the money before he left -- 30,000 pennies in all!⑬On another occasion, he invited a number of important critics to see his private collection of modern paintings.⑭This exhibition received a great deal of attention in the press, for though the pictures were supposed to be the work of famous artists, they had in fact been painted by Dickie.⑮It took him four years to stage this elaborate joke simply to prove that critics do not always know what they are talking about.

snob/snɒb/:someone who thinks they are better than people from a lower social class – used to show disapproval势利的人,谄上欺下的人〔含贬义〕,如:I don’t want to sound like a snob, but I thought she was vulgar.

intensely /in'tensli/:in an intense manner,如:Think intensely how to make it simpler, or whether you really need to remember it.

…preferring always to go on foot.:现在分词短语,作原因状语,表明很少使用小轿车的原因。

One day, he walked intoan expensive shop after having been caught in a particularly heavy shower. ②after为介词,have变成动名词having;③过去完成时的被动语态是:have been done。

be caught in:突然遇上/碰上,如:I was caught in a rain last night.

    such…that…:如此…… He is such a poor man that he couldn’t afford a meal.

bedraggled /bɪ'dræɡld/:looking untidy, wet, and dirty, especially because you have been out in the rain〔尤指淋雨后〕湿漉漉的,又湿又脏的,如:edraggled soldiers crawled into camp.

dump/dʌmp/ :If you dump something somewhere, you put it or unload it there quickly and carelessly. We dumped our bags at the nearby Grand Hotel and hurried toward the market.

apologetic /əpɒlə'dʒetɪk/:showing or saying that you are sorry that something has happened, especially because you feel guilty or embarrassed about it道歉的;谢罪的;愧疚的,如:She gave me an apologetic smile .

reprimand /'reprɪmɑːnd/:to tell someone officially that something they have done is very wrong训斥,谴责,如:The military court reprimanded him for failing to do his duty.

Recognizing who the customer was, the manager was most apologetic and reprimanded the assistant severely.

If you insist on doing something,do it everyday.

    pennies:a plural of penny便士(penny的复数)。

    in all:总计,合计,如:There are 10 people in all.

be supposed to:应该;被期望,如:It tells us to be supposed to maintain the innocent childlike innocence, selfless dauntless, dares to tell the truth.

stage /steɪdʒ/:plan, organize, and carry out (an event),筹划,暗中策划,如:The neighboring tribe staged an invasion.

elaborate /ɪˈlæbərət/:very complicated and detailed; carefully prepared and organized复杂的;详尽的;精心制作的,如:She had prepared a very elaborate meal.

When he was given the watch, he gave the assistant the bag which contained £300 in pennies, which the assistant had to count.
