精读注解
①Dickie disliked snobs intensely.②Though he owned a large car, he hardly ever used it,preferring always to go on foot.③Even when it was raining heavily, he refused to carry an umbrella.④One day, he walked into an expensive shop after having been caught in a particularly heavy shower.⑤He wanted to buy a £300 watch for his wife, but he was in sucha bedraggled condition that an assistant refused to serve him.⑥Dickie left the shop without a word and returned carrying a large cloth bag.⑦As it was extremely heavy, he dumped it on the counter.⑧The assistant asked him to leave, but Dickie paid no attention to him and requested to see the manager.⑨Recognizingwho the customer was, the manager was most apologetic and reprimanded the assistant severely.⑩When Dickie was given the watch, he presented the assistant with the cloth bag.⑪It contained £300 in pennies.⑫He insisted on the assistant's counting the money before he left -- 30,000 pennies in all!⑬On another occasion, he invited a number of important critics to see his private collection of modern paintings.⑭This exhibition received a great deal of attention in the press, for though the pictures were supposed to be the work of famous artists, they had in fact been painted by Dickie.⑮It took him four years to stage this elaborate joke simply to prove that critics do not always know what they are talking about.

snob/snɒb/:someone who thinks they are better than people from a lower social class – used to show disapproval势利的人,谄上欺下的人〔含贬义〕,如:I don’t want to sound like a snob, but I thought she was vulgar. 我不想像个势利小人,但我觉得她就是庸俗。
intensely /in'tensli/:in an intense manner,如:Think intensely how to make it simpler, or whether you really need to remember it. 仔细的思考一下怎样让它简单些,或者你是否真的需要记住。
…preferring always to go on foot.:现在分词短语,作原因状语,表明很少使用小轿车的原因。
【难句解析】One day, he walked intoan expensive shop after having been caught in a particularly heavy shower. ①walk动作发生在catch动作之后,为体现动作前后,walk用过去时(walked),catch则用过去完成时(have caught)。②after为介词,have变成动名词having;③过去完成时的被动语态是:have been done。
be caught in:突然遇上/碰上,如:I was caught in a rain last night.我昨晚遇上了下雨。
such…that…:如此……以致……,如:He is such a poor man that he couldn’t afford a meal.他是那么地贫穷,以致于一顿饭都吃不起。
bedraggled /bɪ'dræɡld/:looking untidy, wet, and dirty, especially because you have been out in the rain〔尤指淋雨后〕湿漉漉的,又湿又脏的,如:edraggled soldiers crawled into camp. 湿漉漉的士兵们慢腾腾地进了兵营。
dump/dʌmp/ :If you dump something somewhere, you put it or unload it there quickly and carelessly. 扔下; 倾倒,如:We dumped our bags at the nearby Grand Hotel and hurried toward the market. 我们把包扔在附近的格兰德旅馆,急匆匆地向市场赶去。
apologetic /əpɒlə'dʒetɪk/:showing or saying that you are sorry that something has happened, especially because you feel guilty or embarrassed about it道歉的;谢罪的;愧疚的,如:She gave me an apologetic smile . 她朝我歉然一笑。
reprimand /'reprɪmɑːnd/:to tell someone officially that something they have done is very wrong训斥,谴责,如:The military court reprimanded him for failing to do his duty. 军事法庭谴责他失职。
【难句解析】Recognizing who the customer was, the manager was most apologetic and reprimanded the assistant severely. ①Recognizing...:现在分词短语作原因状语;②most在这里起强调语气的作用,相当于very。
insist on (doing sth.):坚持,坚信的做某事,如:If you insist on doing something,do it everyday. 如果你希望坚持做某件事,那就坚持每天做。
pennies:a plural of penny便士(penny的复数)。
【词语辨析】便士的两种复数形式pence和pennies,用法不同,区别如下:a 100 pence指1个100便士的硬币,而100 pennies指100个1便士的硬币。
in all:总计,合计,如:There are 10 people in all.总共有10人。
be supposed to:应该;被期望,如:It tells us to be supposed to maintain the innocent childlike innocence, selfless dauntless, dares to tell the truth. 它告诉我们应该保持天真烂漫的童心、无私无畏,敢于说真话。
stage /steɪdʒ/:plan, organize, and carry out (an event),筹划,暗中策划,如:The neighboring tribe staged an invasion.
elaborate /ɪˈlæbərət/:very complicated and detailed; carefully prepared and organized复杂的;详尽的;精心制作的,如:She had prepared a very elaborate meal. 她做了一顿精美的饭菜。
