今年8月起申请2017年秋季入学的本科新生们就要开始启用崭新的加州文书题目和要求了,新的题目一共8篇,要求学生任意从中选择4篇来回答,并且每篇字数不超过350字。
这次的加州文书新变化不仅仅是在数量上的变化,从文书形式上也从原来的两篇总共不超过1000字长篇文章改成了这次新的短篇文章形式。对于申请学生有利的方面是题目范围涉猎更广,学生能够更多角度、更多事件的展示自己。不易的方面是给申请学生增加了难度,需要学生自身有比较全面的背景经历,积累较多的素材可写,能够做到深度挖掘自己,并且具备较好的展示自己驾驭能力。
同时,这次加州大学还贴心的针对每个题目进行了比较详细的官方指导,能够帮助学生更精准的把握出每一个题目加州大学是想了解和发现学生的哪些方面和哪些潜质。
下面是UC系统的8个新文书题目,以及我进行的题目和技巧内容翻译:
题目1. Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.
题目翻译:描述你的领导力经历,你是如何积极影响他人,帮助解决问题,在团队中有较长时间的贡献。
若希写作解析:这一题目考察学生领导力和责任感,学生在写作时要注意思考你担任这个角色中的换位思考,你的自我成长和从中所学到的东西。
官方写作指导:
Things to consider:A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or a taking lead role in organizing an event or project. Think about your accomplishments and what you learned from the experience.What were your responsibilities?
Did you lead a team? How did your experience change your perspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute at your school, church in your community or an organization? And your leadership role doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to school activities.For example, do you help out or take care of your family?
题目2. Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.
题目翻译:展示你有创造力的一面,可以体现在许多方面:问题解决能力、创新思维、艺术创造等等。请描述你是如何展示你的创造力的。

Things to consider:What does creativity mean to you? Do you have a creative skill that is important to you? What have you been able to do with that skill? If you used creativity to solve a problem, what was your solution? What are the steps you took to solve the problem?
How does your creativity influence your decisions inside or outside the classroom? Does your creativity relate to your major or a future career?
题目3. What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?
题目翻译:你认为你最大的天赋或能力是什么,你是如何开发和发展它们的。
若希写作解析:这一题目考察学生自身具备的特别能力,这个能力可大、可小,可以是天赋、才华,也可以是小才能。同时要介绍你的这个特别能力对你有何重要意义,你日常是如何培养这个能力的。
官方写作指导:
Things to consider:If there’s a talent or skill that you’re proud of, this is the time to share it. You don’t necessarily have to be recognized or have received awards for your talent (although if you did and you want to talk about, feel free to do so). Why is this talent or skill meaningful to you?
Does the talent come naturally or have you worked hard to develop this skill or talent? Does your talent or skill allow you opportunities in or outside the classroom? If so, what are they and how do they fit into your schedule?
题目4. Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.
题目翻译:描述你如何利用一个重要的教育机会或你如何努力克服面临的教育困难。
若希写作解析:这一题目考察学生自我学习能力,学生可以选择写第一个问题(你如何利用一个重要的教育机会),也可以选择写第二个问题(你如何努力克服面临的教育困难)。相比来说第一个比第二个想对好写一些,可以写学生具体学习哪门课程或者参加校内/校外一些特殊教育经历中的学习阶段、学习成长和自我体会。如果写第二题目,要重点关注写面临的困难是什么,为什么对你来说是困难,以及你是如何有效克服困难。
官方写作指导:
Things to consider:An educational opportunity can be anything that has added value to your educational experience and better prepared you for college. For example, participation in an honors or academic enrichment program, or enrollment in an academy that’s geared toward an occupation or a major, or taking advanced courses that interest you — just to name a few.
If you choose to write about educational barriers you’ve faced, how did you overcome or strived to overcome them? What personal characteristics or skills did you call on to overcome this challenge? How did overcoming this barrier help shape who are you today?
题目5. Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
题目翻译:描述你遇到的最大挑战,必须采取措施克服这一挑战。你是如何战胜挑战的,这一挑战对你的学业有何积极影响。
若希写作解析:这一题目考察学生在校内或校外的自我挑战能力,可以是挑战自我,可以是挑战某个人,也可以是挑战某一个机构,挑战对象不限,但这个挑战要积极而有意义。同时学生要简单介绍下为何你要挑战,挑战的初衷,以及挑战后的结果和对你的成长和感悟。
官方写作指导:
Things to consider:A challenge could be personal, or something you have faced in your community or school. Why was the challenge significant to you? This is a good opportunity to talk about any obstacles you’ve faced and what you’ve learned from the experience. Did you have support from someone else or did you handle it alone?
If you’re currently working your way through a challenge, what are you doing now, and does that affect different aspects of your life? For example, ask yourself, “How has my life changed at home, at my school, with my friends, or with my family?”
题目6.Describe your favorite academic subject and explain how it has influenced you.
题目翻译:描述你最喜欢的学科,说明这个学科对你的影响。
若希写作解析:这一题目考察学生某一领域的专注程度,这个领域可以是校内的学术课程,也可以是校外的活动组织,学生要注意描述为何喜欢或感兴趣,以及如果自我丰富这一领域专业知识或活动经历的。

Things to consider:Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had inside and outside the classroom — such as volunteer work, summer programs, participation in student organizations and/or activities — and what you have gained from your involvement.
Has your interest in the subject influenced you in choosing a major and/or career? Have you been able to pursue coursework at a higher level in this subject (honors, AP, IB, college or university work)?
题目7. What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?
题目翻译:请描述你做过的对你学校或社区有益的事情,使它们变得更好。
若希写作解析:这个题目可以考察学生的领导能力、团队协作能力或有效执行能力,题目中的“社区”定义可以是你的高中、家乡、家里或者一切你认为合适的地方。学生写作时要记得将最初做这个时间的初衷简单描述下,并具体将如何进行的行动和结果阐述清楚。
官方写作指导:
Things to consider:Think of community as a term that can encompass a group, team or a place – like your high school, hometown, or home. You can define community as you see fit, just make sure you talk about your role in that community. Was there a problem that you wanted to fix in your community?
Why were you inspired to act?What did you learn from your effort? How did your actions benefit others, the wider community or both? Did you work alone or with others to initiate change in your community?
题目8. What is the one thing that you think sets you apart from other candidates applying to the University of California?
题目翻译:请描述你与其他加州大学申请者有什么不同,有什么是你相比更为突出的部分。
若希写作解析:这个题目是典型的Why Essay题目,主要考察学生对加州大学的了解程度,以及自身哪些方面与加州大学非常匹配,学生不仅要充分展示自身独特性,同时更要注意与UC的匹配度。
官方写作指导:
Things to consider:Don’t be afraid to brag a little. Even if you don’t think you’re unique, you are — remember, there’s only one of you in the world. From your point of view, what do you feel makes you belong on one of UC’s campuses? When looking at your life, what does a stranger need to understand in order to know you?
What have you not shared with us that will highlight a skill, talent, challenge, or opportunity that you think will help us know you better? We’re not necessarily looking for what makes you unique compared to others, but what makes you, YOU.
今年的加州大学文书题目虽然进行了新改革,但是总结上面的八个题目不难看出其实核心关注点与其他美国大学并无差别,都是想更全面、更精准的去了解和筛选每一位申请人。重点录取倾向是那些具备领导力、专注度、持久度和独特才能深度的学生。
以往的加州大学文书题目固定,倾向录取那些GPA和标准化成绩高的学生,但对于每年大幅攀升的国际生申请人数,光靠这两项去考核选择学生显然会令加州大学越来越困难,所以加州大学文书改革是必然。同时对于那些标化成绩不是太突出,但是个人综合背景比较丰富的学生,这样的改革是个好消息,能够让这类申请人更加脱颖而出。
