上面这句话也不是很难理解，主要就是单词不认识：

此句来自《现代英汉综合大词典》：
*The enemy troop couldn't make any advance, and neither could they retreat. *
敌军进退两难。
有两个问题，需要特别注意：
一、neither 跟so 的用法一致，都是副词。所以，它引导的倒装句，如果前句没有句号，那么，之前应加and。
（就像我们上面的例句）
例如：
I never learned to swim and neither did they.
我从没学过游泳，他们也没有。

或者，单独成句，开头用大写：
I can't ever recall Dad hugging me. Neither did I sit on his knee.

二、neither 只能引导部分倒装句，只需把“操作词”（即：助动词或情态动词）提前，而实意动词置后
以上属于半倒装结构 neither/nor+情态动词+主语
“顺说倒装句”是顺应前面所出现的表述
表明另一种类似情况而形成的部分倒装形式的倒装句， 其基本结构为
“so/neither/nor＋助动词/情态动词/系动词be＋主语”，
用放在句首的so(针对前面肯定性的内容)或者neither, nor(针对前面否定性的内容)表明与前面所说的情况类似的情况。
(1)表示肯定情况：so+情态动词/助动词/系动词+主语
He can ride a bike, and so can I.
他会骑自行车， 我也会。
The boy died, and a week later, so did his friend.
那男孩死了， 一周后， 他朋友也死了。
Society has changed and so have the people in it.
社会变了， 人也跟着变了。
(2)表示否定情况：neither/nor+情态动词/助动词/系动词+主语
Tom doesn’t like bananas. Neither/Nor does his wife.
汤姆不喜欢吃香蕉。他妻子也不喜欢。
If you won’t go. Neither will I. 如果你不去， 我也不去。
