Louise Erdrich used a sad story The Round House tries to tell us the long history of the USA law problem with the Indian reservation. The main problem is women being raped by white men the law could not bring the criminals to justice. This story has a lot of characters, today we are focused on the character Mooshum. Mooshum is Joe’s mother’s dad, Joe’s grandfather, also he is the oldest person in the story: “By means of this ceaseless and seemingly quixotic activity, Mooshum stayed alive. When he was past the age of ninety years”(Erdrich 131). As we know Indian people pass on culture and skill down to next generation. From him we can know the Indian history, and Joe can learn the Indian culture style from the old grandfather.
For this reason, Louise Erdrich builds up the very strong Indian story to show readers why the problem of the law has affected them for so long. Mooshum is not the main character, but is a very important person in the story, because he connects all the main characters in the story. Mooshum is the symbol for the Indian culture and history for us to understand the Indian culture. If this story was written without Joe’s grandfather Mooshum, this story will not be good for the reader to get to know Indian history. Louise Erdrich writes a lot of details about the main character Joe spending time with his grandfather Mooshum, the old family tree presented by Mooshum from the began to the end of the story.
Over all, the story builds up very smoothly from Joe’s family, grandfather Mooshum, and Joe’s uncle’s family, also Joe’s friends. In this way, it is easy for the reader to know why grandfather Mooshum is the most important person in the story, without him the reader would be lost and would never get the picture of the whole story of where they come from.
