麦豆悦读英文绘本讲师训练营【22期】12/21 how to

    <Teaching goal>

    This is the last class of the English Improvement Course. I want to use this story to help students review the process of Flow-Chart writing and enhance the critical thinking again. The most important goal is to encourage students to keep their dream and when they want to give up their goals, this story can help them to keep fighting for their dream.

    <In-class Instruction>

    Teacher: Do you have any dreams?

    Ss: I want to travel to the moon.\ I want to study in Australia.\ I want to pass the IELTS exam.\ I want to go through the Higher education examination successfully.

    T: Do you know how to achieve your dreams?

    Ss: Step by step.

    T: What elements are important for achieving the goal or dream?

    At that time, students kept silent. Then, I took out of the book "How to catch a star", and introduced this picture book for students. 

    Introduction of the story:

    "How to catch the star" was created by Oliver Jeffers. This book was the No.1 smash hit The Day the crayons Quit. 

    About the Cover: from the cover, what do you know from the cover? In this story, catching a star is this little boy's dream. Do you know how does the boy catch a star? Then, students had a discussion with partners. 

    Ss: take the rocket? take a bird? just fly into the sky? etc.

    After the discussion, I played the audio of the story for students.


    How to Catch a Star - Oliver Jeffers

    When I played the audio for students, I stoped at some points to ask students some question. The following are question examples:

    1. Why did not the little boy see the star when he wakes up? Ss: Because the star only rise at night. The star and the sun will not appear at the same time in the sky.

    2. What kinds of personality does this boy show when he keeps waiting for the star? 

    Ss: It is patience.

    3. At that time, do you think the little boy give up catching a star?

    Some students said, maybe not. Some students believe that the little boy would not like to keep catching a star.

    4. Is the star the little boy catch finally the same as that he wants to catch initially?

    Students: no. 

    5. Do you think the little were satisfied with this star?

    Students: Yes. Because the little boy is smiling and he is playing hide-and-seek with the star and having a long walk with it. 

    <In-class Activity>

    1. Before students knew the ending of this story, I required students to make a brain storm about how to help the little boy to catch a stars. 

    2. After listening for the whole story, I required students to review the whole story especially the part of catching the star. Students need to draw some pictures to help them to review that or they draw the flow-chart to review that.
