From 1933 to 1937, the Palace Museum published its calendars until war came. The tradition began again in 2009. Its popularity has made the publishing of calendars a favorite routine for the museum. Each year's series mainly features one animal in the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac(生肖), introducing cultural relics related to that animal on its pages. For the main calendar of 2024, which celebrates the upcoming Year of Dragon, 93 cultural relics about dragons are chosen to express wishes for prosperity(繁荣) and good luck. The museum has also released special versions of the calendars. For example, in the painting and calligraphy calendar, works by great masters throughout Chinese history are selected for the pages. Other versions include one particularly designed for children and an English-Chinese bilingual version.

One of the 2023 series is a brief art history book of figure paintings. Figure paintings from the museum were chosen for its pages. Designers also chose one theme for each season. The atmosphere around the figures in the paintings may be in keeping with a certain season. For example, ladies feature in the section of spring and take a fresh and bright tone (色调), while the winter section creates a serious atmosphere through paintings of emperors, politicians, generals and other famous historical figures.
