Can money buy happiness? According to the online course taught by the Yale Professor Laurie Santos, No. The name of the class is “The Science of Well-Being”. It was so popular that Yale offers it online, for free!
I am receiving regular email updates from "Pocket", a website that offers the latest articles that are trending in today's world. An article about this class has got my attention. It summarized the topic of this online class. So I went to the class website and found out. I end up signing up for it. It's free anyways. But if you would like to get a completion certificate (Yes, they even got that!), you can pay $45 to get one at the completion.
Some interesting facts about wealth and happiness that I have learned from the article:
A research conducted by Princeton in 2010, while happiness does rise with one’s income, the correlation peaks at about $75,000 per year.
A 2012 survey by [Skandia International’s Wealth Sentiment Monitor], found that the global “happiness income” to be much higher, at $160,000.
These are pretty hefty numbers for an average Joe to achieve no matter what country you live. The author of the article found that after attending the class, the following are life-changing strategies and mindset that would make you live happier:
-
Learning new skills for a more positive life outcome, not just for money or “advancement” in your career.
-
Being kinder by spending money on others, instead of yourself.
-
Making more time for friends and family, instead of working (on weekends, especially).
-
Spending less money on things that aren’t long-lasting, like extravagant gadgets and more bedsheets that you actually need.
-
Incorporating healthy habits into your days, such as exercising, journaling, and meditation.
Did you see one of the items in #5? That's exactly what I am doing here - journaling. I hope you do, too.
Enjoy your journaling. Cheers!
