He was born on October 21, 1833, and the fourth child in his family.
He wasn’t a strong child, but he developed an intellectual curiosity in science.
His father was an engineer and inventor who had a strong desire to make a fortune.
As a result of bad luck and financial misfortune, his father’s company went bankrupt, which posed tremendous challenge to his family. Afterward, his father went to Russia where his father enjoyed a great business success in making explosives.
With the inspiration of his father’s business, he showed a passion for chemistry, technology and engineering in the early age.
As his father offered him enough money to pursue his higher education, he had been studying chemical engineering in Paris for a year.
Even though he never had a chemistry degree, but working in the Royal College of Chemistry laboratory grave him an opportunity to meet the most important man, who was the inventor of nitroglycerin（硝化甘油）. With his own eyes he witnessed an incredible chemical reaction that the explosion of the chemical was more powerful than that of gunpowder.
After he had almost finished his education, he went back to Russia and worked with his father to improve explosives with the mix of nitroglycerin.
However, unfortunately his brother was killed in an accident caused by unstable and highly explosive chemical. The unexpected tragedy not only broke his heart, but also led him to invent explosives much safer for users.
Thanks to his invention, he eventually manufactured a new explosive, known as “dynamite”（甘油炸药）, which can only be detonation（引爆） by a certain detonator（雷管）. During to the easy control and high safety of new explosive, it was widely applied in construction industry and mining industry.
The demand of the dynamite surged dramatically so that he had to establish many branches and factories all over the world.
As he received many lucrative orders from the military, he was stigmatized as the merchant of death, but deep inside, he was a pacifist.
In his will, he bequeathed all of his fortune to created annual prizes for people who made the most great contribution to the field of chemistry, medicine, physics, literature and peace.
