Introduction: why be interesting ?
To limit your regrets.
So you can respect yourself.
In order to banish boredom.
So that you can leave a mark, not a blemish.
And most of all, because you can.
blemish: a mark on the skin or on an object that spoils it and makes it look less beautiful or perfect.
According to the introduction, the author tries to strengthen one idea that you can feel interested in the world and become an interesting person. You can take actions to turn your boring life into an interesting and colorful one.
Step 1: Go exploring
Explore ideas, places, and opinions. The inside of the echo chamber is where all the boring people hang out.
echo chamber: a room with sound-reflecting walls used for producing hollow or echoing sound effects.
All of the interested people walk outside to explore everything they have never seen, felt or smelt, that is, something new. Talking to yourself will assure your sour moments. But life is to be filled with as much different experiences as possible so that you will stay away boredom naturally.
Talk to strangers.
Roll the dice.
Turn them off to explore new places.
roll the dice: to assume a risk by taking action.
How long have been a new place? How long have you established a new friendship?
Yes, you have spent most of your time in old relationship and are afraid to talk potential interesting people. I used to like talking to strangers in train, most of who have totally different experiences from me. I was inspired by their stories and therefore took actions to change my own life. But I have been warned by my mom and close people to stay away with strangers who are dangerous. I do hope that I am wise enough to distinguish the possible danger and embrace those interesting strangers.
Little changes in life:
1. Take daily vacations.
If only for a few minutes. Stroll around in the early hours, when the sunlight is a silver. Walk to a different mailbox. Read magazines in a Laundromat. Shower in the dark. Sip hot chocolate in an alley. Reclaim your spare moments.
reclaim: to get back something that you have lost or that has been taken away from you.
2. Tweak the schedule.
Wake up before the alarm. Steal moments between stoplights to compare poems. Sneak off to a moonlit spot when you’d otherwise be watching something on a glowing screen. Work at night and play in the daytime. Care out hours for the dreams you’ve been putting off.
tweak: to make slight changes to a machine, system, etc. to improve it.
Do you really know your surrounding objects? Go outside, you will find something new.
Find the interesting stories.
Childlike not childish.
Look with open eyes.
Remember how amazing the world was before you learned not to be cynical.
childlike: having the qualities that children usually have, especially innocence.
Keep asking why.
You have learnt many knowledge in school, but you can learn more in the world.
