Ever since my first day reading the great novel “The call of the wild”, I couldn’t help myself from reading original English masterpiece everyday from then on.
What’s more, my mind has started to fly wildly with the heart-stiring progress of how Buck had been transformed from a well-being, pride house dog and the king of all creatures on the farm in the south to a real king in the wilderness of Alaska, as strong and smart as he needed to survive and made a real dog/wolf dignity life following the law of the wilderness rather than the civilized law vastly obeyed in his first four years of life. Not all house dog could make it for sure.
Many dogs who are weak adaptors lost their lives in the cruel wild or what we usually call it the nature law—— No empathy or pity on anyone at all, to survive means to be strong and wise enough to beat anyone who wanted to challege or needed to be killed to fill the empty stomach. Only one leader is allowed in one pack and the fight must be a death one.
Even though I’ve learnt about the cruelty of the wilderness, I still kept dreaming about sending my love dog Goddess, a female mini golden retriever who is also four years old to return to the wilderness so that she could live like a real dog, in which I think is to help her live her life in the best way, as that’s how a dog should live, not like her current life with us, even though I really love her considering these four years she has been together with us.
How is she living now in contrast to Buck?
Dog house:
Buck: When it was -40-60 ‘C, he would dig a hole in the snow and sleep in it to keep himself warm enough to go to sleep.

Goddess: Whatever how cold it is outside, the room she sleeps in is always above 20’C. She even has a mat under to keep her warm.

Psychology:
Buck: Whenever even during sleep, he kept alert and ready to fight for his life.

Goddess: She trusts us and could sleep anywhere she likes and she trusts us so deep that she doesn’t make a tiny sound or protest even when we step onto her tail, legs and even head, by accident of course.

Coat and hair:
Buck: “He was in perfect condition, without a bit of extra flesh, and the one hundred and fifty pounds that he weighed were all muscle.
His fluffy coat shone like silk.
Down the neck and across the shoulders, his fur seemed to rise up with every movement, as though each particular hair was alive.
The great breast and heavy front legs were the same as the rest of the body, with muscles that showed in tight rolls underneath the skin.”

Goddess: Even though I know that all dogs change clothes twice a year to adapt to the seasonal changes considering they are wearing only one coat all their lives, house dogs’ shedding problem is really a headache especially living a buildings in city rather than open yard in country. They could shed hair all the time and concentrately for more than a month. But the amount is too much to endure that we could even make a sweater to fit her in. And the hair is everywhere almost omnipresent, no surprise to find some in our food as well! Clothes of course, hardly to sweep off clearly that we have to take them everywhere. The main reason for her loss of such heavy hair and slower progress in getting more should be that it is too warm for her to live compared to her native comfort zone is -40’C.

And when she goes outside, she would have to wear clothes and shoes!

Fighting ability:
Buck:
He killed a bear in the forest.
He killed an injured moose after a four-day & night inexhaustible chasing by harassing the moose unable to drink, eat or sleep.
He killed several Yeehats to make revenge on the death of her beloved John Thornton.
Defeating a cunning dog through a death fight like Pike should be a piece of cake with his ability at the end of the book.

Goddess:
Considering there’s rare opportunities to test or prove her fighting ability, Goddess is often behaved as one of the most gentle, obedience and happy personality which has made her a wonderful pet as we could live with and even with a baby in the same room. She is not a baby tender as she’s not trained for this and she’s never been a mother yet from which she might be able to gain her motherhood towards babies. That’s an ideal situation that seldom families could have such a dog. But I can tell you a real story when she was 3 years old. It was the first day I put her into four brand new dog shoes when I took her out in the evening when we encountered a 10-months old Alaska who naughtily robbed her favorite ball away in her big mouth. The Alaska was really big, much taller than my mini golden retriever but not very strong because of the lack of enough sport compared to Goddess. So Goddess dare not to take initiative to get her ball at the beginning. She quietly followed the Alaska keenly for 3min and suddenly she knocked the Alaska down with the naughty girl’s back on the ground and Goddess kept pressing her in the above until the young Alaska cried for a beg. And even after a dog fight, none of her necklace, clothes or any of her new four shoes flies off during the fight. It was too quick that I could not see every detail clearly.
I was shocked by her fighting ability and a little proud because she has not lost her strength to live as a dog completely. I even feel safer with her for a second until I realized that she’s still the one I need to protect because she lives in a human dominated world in which fighting isn’t welcomed or even make people think the dog is so dangerous that she should have a dog trial on her neck whenever she’s in the public. What’s more, the policemen prohibite raising large dogs whose height above 35cm within the 5th Round in Beijing. The tense lasts at least one month every year. Besides, it was the ball she’s protecting. We human, are too strong and wise for her to protect from her point of view from my understanding.

Another wise fight but not a praise-worthy one was in her one year old. One night a samoyed’s master took some lamb spine hotspot leftover for her dog and let her eat in the usual garden we walk dogs every day. Goddess soon discovered the delicacy by her sharp nose and quickly ran to the place, and after a few minutes the dog fight was over with Goddess pressing the samoyed in a position the samoyed could not move by pressing her to a wall with her front leg grabbed like we see maybe a professional policeman could show in morden time like below. In the end, the Samoyed could only watch Goddess enjoyed all the delicacies which should have been in her stomach.

I’m not encouraging my dog to be a bully in our neighborhood, but I just want to show how wise, fast and strong she could be for food, from which I’ve learnt that she’s not a gentle pet, she has her strong sides.
Although she could win in some fight, but she seldom fight unless her precious ball is robbed by other dogs and she’s confident to win. If she meets someone bigger or stronger than she is, she never go in a rush but observe and analyse the enemy for a while, then find their weakness and take a fast win with no one hurt or bleeding. What a smart and strategic creature! Her intelligence ranking in No 4 in dogs really mean something.
Connections to human:
Buck: Buck’s great love for his last master John Thornton is wordless to describe. I even worried about whether he would die when he wanted to save his master.
Not to mention to rescue his master in the fury current 3 times and succeeded with three of his ribs broken. Not to mention merely a push on his master’s shoulder could make him so angry that he had torn open the throat of the pusher.
Not to mention the “you say jump I jump undoubtly” by the reef.
Not to mention he successfully dragged a thousand ponds of frozen sled for a hundred yards by his 150 pounds’s lean body just as he loved his master.
Goddess:
I never had similar chances to test and prove whether Goddess could do it. But I know she isn’t that good loyal. She’s our daughter and wonderful companion in all. As a daughter she needs our love and protection as she never knows that she might be the stronger in the wild. Merely in food, I could never compare. I heard before from an expert from the world’s No 1 dog food manufacturer Royal Cannin that they are considering continues development on dog food considering once there’s no sufficient food on earth. They may crunch feathers into powder as a source of protein in dog food. I hardly understood him until he explained, dogs and humans are different. We may care about the food in its full condition such as big piece of chicken or fish. But dogs discovered anything they could reuse to be as one source of food no matter what it looks like or how disgusting it can be. The reason why they eat poo explains it—— when we see it smelly and disgusting, a dog sees what nutritions have not been fully digested in it which he/she could reuse it. So they only eat some of the poos not all of them. And their amazing digesting system allow them to eat poo without getting sick.
She is a wonderful companion means she never feel bored no matter how long she’s been with us until we have to leave her for something else. I could never forget how she accompanied me while I was pregnent for 9 months. I’ve got a sensitive bladder ever since my 2.5 months. I could never enjoy a full night sleep ever since then. It was admirable when my husband was always sound asleep the whole night but the admiration turns to be a jealousy and loneliness in the long nights of the following 7 months. But Goddess became my soulmate who was always awake when I got up every night for the far bathroom. I ate something bad one day and I threw up without the time to run to the toilet and went to bathroom several times that night. My husband didn’t wake up until I cried for help, while Goddess waited at the bathroom door with her head laid on her feet and eyes fightfully open. She was so sweet that even a simple touching on her fur, hug or look in each other’s eyes could heal my loneliness. One big joy I have is to put my feet on her fluffy and constant 42 Celcius body especially it is cold. She is also my pillow sometimes. So you could know why I wear her clothes and shoes before, huh!
She also touched my heart one time we got back from a parenting swimming with my son and he fell asleep on the way back. Goddess was so anxcious that she immediately jumped up to the bed where we laid our boy while she seldom got on our bed before. She examined her younger brother carefully and soon felt relived as soon as she found he was in good condition but just fell asleep. Then she kept lie down besides her brother with her body surrounding him and her head gently besides his.

More companion shots:

Maybe my sharing is not proving my view to send Goddess to the wild to live like a real dog with pride and dignity, but I’m telling that how a dog is so adaptable to survive in various of situations. Buck needed to pull a sled or fight for his life in the wildness to become that strong and wise and he still needed to worry about his life every minutes.
But dogs like Goddess who has met a responsible and loving family like us can live easier. Even though she might never learn how great she could be in her world but she is still a well being dog. Maybe this is also her way to make the best of her dog life.
