The Fox and the Grapes

One hot summer's day a Fox was strolling through an orchard till he came to a bunch of Grapes just ripening on a vine which had been trained over a lofty branch.

"Just the thing to quench my thirst," quoth he.

Drawing back a few paces, he took a run and a jump, and just missed the bunch.

Turning round again with a One, Two, Three, he jumped up, but with no greater success.

Again and again he tried after the tempting morsel, but at last had to give it up, and walked away with his nose in the air, saying: "I am sure they are sour."

It is easy to despise what you cannot get.

One hot summer's day a Fox was strolling through an orchard till he came to a bunch of Grapes just ripening on a vine which had been trained over a lofty branch.

主句是a Fox was strolling through an orchard,主语是a Fox,谓语是was strolling,宾语是an orchard,此处用了过去进行时态,表示这只狐狸在那个炎热的夏日正在散步;till he came to a bunch of Grapes just ripening on a vine是时间状语从句;which had been trained over a lofty branch是定语从句,修饰先行词a vine,关系代词which在从句中作主语,从句的谓语使用了过去完成时的被动语态,结构为“had been+过去分词”,表示葡萄藤在狐狸看到葡萄前已经被修剪过了。
