1、Consider the past year alone: cyberthieves stole $81m from the central bank of Bangladesh.

e.g. The shoes alone cost £200.
    Alone
    1、独自. e.g. I don't like going out alone at night.
    2、独力;单独. e.g. It's hard bringing up children alone.
3、无依无靠;孤独;寂寞. e.g. She felt all alone in the world.
You can't blame anyone else; you alone made the decision.

    Alone
    1、leave / let sb alone
    e.g. Leave me alone.
    2、leave / let sth alone
e.g. I've told you before—leave my things alone!
    3、let alone
e.g. We fear no death, let alone difficulties.

2、 There is little evidence that these gadgets will be any more trustworthy than their desktop counterparts.

One reason computer security is so bad today is that few people were taking it seriously yesterday.

e.g. Few things in this world give me more pleasure than a long bath.

3、 Such weaknesses are compounded by the history of the internet, in which security was an afterthought.

4、 Governments’ first priority is to refrain from making the situation worse.

If you refrain from doing sth, you deliberately do not to do it.

5、 Terrorist attacks, like the recent ones in St Petersburg and London, often spark calls for encryption to be weakened so that the security services can better monitor what individuals are up to.

e.g. Fit people are better able to cope with stress.

    美剧中常听到的be up to一般是表示是…
e.g. It's not up to you to tell me how to do my job.
e.g. Shall we eat out or stay in? It's up to you.
    本句里的be up to 是表示在做什么。
e.g. What are you up to at the moment?

    Day 2:Translation

    2. That requires a kind of cultivated paranoia which does not come naturally to non-tech firms.

    3. Such weaknesses are compounded by the history of the internet, in which security was an afterthought.

    4. Computer security is best served by encryption that is strong for everyone.

Rather than support America, European “allies” increasingly see their national interests best served by distancing themselves from the US as much as possible./ This suggests that small, open economies may be best served by fixed exchange rates.

    5. A firm that takes reasonable steps to make things safe, but which is compromised nevertheless, will have recourse to an insurance payout that will stop it from going bankrupt.

Eg. But hard work will only get you so far, the rest is genetic, according to an expert.
Clear and powerful writing is a rare skill in business, and it will get you far.

    7. Silicon valley’s “go fast and break things” style of innovation is possible only if firms have relative free rein to put out new products while they still need perfecting.

    知识点:Put out=launch也是高频词。发布新产品:launch/put out a new product

    Phrase

Take security serious enough: 足够重视安全, take sth seriously, pay attention to, attach importance to都是“重视”的意思。

    Take advantage of:利用

    Point of illicit entry:

Create incentives for safer behavior:

    Refrain from doing sth:

    Spark calls for: 激发对….

    Hamper the ability of:削弱…的能力

Oblige sb to do sth:

    Disclaim liability for: 豁免…的责任

    Draw comparisons to: 与….对比

    Lax attitude:

    Come down hard with:严厉惩罚

    Day 3 Logic lines

    The myth of cyber-secruity.jpg

。。encryption that is strong for everyone.
