Some people think that climate change could have a negative effect on business. Other people think that climate change could create more opportunities. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Since climate change is inextricably linked to nearly everything people do in today's world, some assume it’s starting to have a negative impact on business around the world while others believe it will bring huge opportunities to some industries. From my perspective, climate change is both a threat and an opportunity.

Admittedly, climate change is expected to alter weather patterns throughout the world. Storms are  becoming more severe with all sorts of negative consequences, which may cause greater losses to insurance companies and not only make oceanic shipping more dangerous but also damage marine life. Apart from storms, scientists have associated climate change with other increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as floods, droughts and heat waves and so forth, which will affect established farming areas negatively. However, despite of the above adverse influence, climate change will create abundant opportunities as well.

When governments around the globe are taking mitigation strategies, aiming to limit or reduce the magnitude of long term climate change, primarily by reducing or preventing the emission of greenhouse gases, enterprises will be stimulated to invest and innovate in new green products and services that are more environmental-friendly and low-carbon. As a consequence, jobs will be created in new emerging green sectors because the demand for goods and services of renewable energies is expanding. Besides governments, companies which may be encouraged to set ambitious targets for wind, solar, and hydro-power will also take advantage of any related opportunities and seek a series of adaptation measures to minimize the negative effects of climate change on societies, economies and individuals.

In conclusion, although the devastating effects of climate change cannot be ignored, like any disruptive force, climate change is creating numerous opportunities for businesses willing to innovate.
