When it comes to reducing time spent on the road by commuters, some incline to the view that the best way is to substitute workers’ apartment buildings for parks and gardens near the city center, whereas others does not agree with this proposal. From my perspective, although building blocks of flats for workers in the places close to the central city sounds reasonable, it is inappropriate to convert parks and gardens into apartment buildings.

Admittedly, since most companies are located in the city center, if commuters can live close to their companies, their time spent on travelling to work will become less. They can also choose low-carbon commuting ways like walking and cycling to travel to work, which is beneficial for both physical and mental health. Despite living near the inner city can decrease commuting time to some extent, it is not the best way to solve the problem because parks and gardens are integral and fundamental parts for a city and they should not be replaced by apartment buildings.

First and foremost, parks and gardens are essential urban infrastructures. Besides being pleasing to the eye, greenery in parks and gardens also contributes to the mental, physical and emotional well-being of citizens. Furthermore, numerous studies have indicated that people can gain tremendous benefits from regular exposure to greenery. To be specific, a recent environmentally focused research has been discovering that urban greening improves the social well being of residents in a variety of ways such as crime reduction, business enhancement, and stress reduction and so on. Therefore, parks and gardens cannot give way to apartment buildings for commuters.

In conclusion, it is necessary to find other solutions to long commuting time. Anyway, it is inadvisable to construct apartment buildings in the areas that should have been parks and gardens. (299 words)
