人类语言水平是 AI 取代人工翻译的最大障碍:以医学论文为例

    最近翻了几篇新冠肺炎论文,让我再次思考AI取代人工翻译的话题。在羊君看来,人类的语言水平会是 AI 让人工翻译下岗的最大障碍。

    先不说机器翻译在语言学习等方面遇到的技术问题,其服务对象本身就常常挖坑。中文是形散的语言,很多时候逻辑隐含在意思中,加上很多人的语言水平不够好,句子语病较多,逻辑比较涣散,标点符号使用不规范,机器就比较难作出正确处理。

    下面的4段话都出自同一篇论文,已经做了隐私保护处理。这篇论文真的很难翻,主要是因为语言表达水平不够好,翻译要花额外时间来理解原文,并且要想办法在英语行文中将原文逻辑合理化。

    1.回顾性分析2019年12月至2020年2月中国远东大学附属高山医院接受ECMO联合支持治疗的病例资料,包括年龄、性别、临床症状、首发症状、既往史和并发症情况等,入院时与ECMO联合治疗时的炎症指标的变化,包括红细胞计数、白细胞计数和炎症因子。

    分析:原文写作主要问题在于并列层级比较多,句子很长,而且没有使用合适的关联词来明示这种并列关系,机器翻译已经逻辑混乱了。

    2.肺炎患者的严重程度与病毒和机体的炎症反应强度相关,如出现过度炎症反应,可能导致严重后果甚至死亡。

    分析:原文的问题在于“病毒和机体的炎症反应强度”容易引起误解,其字面可以作两种理解:一是病毒+机体炎症反应;二是机体对病毒的炎症反应。从后面“如出现过度炎症反应”来看,应该是第二种理解。但是机器只能从字面上进行“理解”,所以基本都翻译错误。

    分析:原文的问题在于三个并列项的表达结构并不一致,第一个并列项是“形容词+名词”,第二个并列项是“名词+形容词”,第三个并列项是“动词+名词”。这就导致机器翻译的结果也出现同样的不一致,甚至错误。

    分析:原文的问题在于句子明显逻辑错误,机器翻译直接顺下来逻辑自然也是错误的。这里就需要人工翻译进行必要调整,将原文的逻辑合理化。
