Write a few paragraphs about corporate social responsibility. Do you believe companies have a responsibility to society? Or do you think a company's only responsibility is to its shareholders? Give examples of CSR that you are familiar with.
Should a company have a responsibility to society? Yes! In the “China Civil Law”, legislators call an individual as “man in nature”, a company, “man in law”; and stress on the equality of their civil rights. Society is composed by all men. Certainly, each man, be him a man in nature or a man in law, should share his social responsibility, and, his share should be commensurate to his power and ability. A company should be a good neighbor, playing an equal role in the community, doing good for society, for the nation and even for the world; a company should take care of people, provide fairly paid job opportunities, and promote a living standard of quality and stability. CSR makes sound business sense. Saying this, a bad example comes to my mind. Pengzhou Petrochemical, a state-owned large-scale comprehensive enterprise, was set up with an investment of sixty billionyuan, in Pengzhou, a northern satellite city of Chengdu metropolis. It was resulted from the bad decision made by few corrupted high rank officials of Sichuan province. In winter, the southbound wind blows the poisonous emissions into Chengdu, causing for a long time thick polluted haze in Chengdu, which is even worse than that in Beijing. The local authority takes over the company’s CSR and plays PR tricks and cynical stunts always. No matter what they say, people breath in it, know it; the haze has been hurting public health, and hitting the housing industry, the economic pillar of current China.
