Tell you what! My hometown, Chicheng, has been enlisted as nationwide traditional historical town. I felt somewhat cynical, watching the news that a group of officials were visiting the Farmers’ Marketplace in Waterwell Inlet, where some traditional smells are still haunting.
My beautiful hometown lives only in my dream: Zhixi creek winds down from the upstream along the national route 318 then makes a right turn, cutting Chicheng town apart, with the only two main streets extending along its both banks. A wooden bridge, named Flyover Clouds, situated very next to the river-bend. Sustained by three huge stone piers, the bridge is 15 meters above water surface. Two more floors were added above the bridge passage floor. The unique building with wooden frame and floors, roofed with blue ceramic tiles, is a famous landmark of the town. About 600 meters down the stream lies across a stone bridge, Red-Star Bridge, which is strong enough for automobiles. Two huge ficus-virens stand on each end of the bridge, leaving their limbs and leaves dipping into water. Another 600 meters down with a shallow left turn, stand a group of stone piers, on which we could walk across. On the right bank%% is a small alluvial fan resided by Kuige tower, a wooden architecture on octagonal stone base, 5 floors, with its eight overhanging eaves stretching out. Surrounded by sports square, park and grapefruit orchard, the erecting tower has been witnessing the changing of my hometown for few hundred years. Looking over the creek, the upper half of a white tower lures me, with its lower half hiding in foothills, and with its water reflection in the tranquil creek. It is the Jiufeng Temple Tower, 13 floors, entirely built with bricks; it has been dating with the creek for 800 years…
Gone is my dreamed hometown. Now, new buildings have replaced traditional blue-tile-roof houses; avenues are taking the places of old alleys… Traditional tastes have almost been annihilated!
