A Dream on the Night of Lantern Festival

The water of Fei to the east endlessly flows.

No seeds of love in the beginning should have been sown.

Your image in my dream was not as clear as in your portrait.

The crying of mountain birds caused me to wake up in darkness with a startle.

Spring not yet green;

grey temples can be seen.

Parting grief over a long time will gradually subside.

Who let us chant poetry alone in two different places

on this Lantern Festival Night year after year?

Only you and I know.

A Dream on the Eve of the Lantern Festival

By Fei River that flows eastward night and day,

We sowed seeds of love – a fatal move, I’d say.

As vaguely as in the mist your face I saw

And my dream was broken by cries of a jackdaw.

Spring is not yet green,

My hair gray has been;

Long absence should have worn out our grief clean,

Then why are we made each in silence to cry

When the yearly Lantern Festival draws nigh?

My grey hair seen,

Our separation’s been too long to grieve the heart.

Why make the past reappear

Before us from year to year

On Lantern Festival when we are far apart!
