5月22日，中国国际电视台（CGTN）主播刘欣和翠西·里根（Trish Regan）的一场隔空激辩引发社会广泛关注。两人将在美国时间5月29日晚8点，即北京时间周四早8点，在电视节目中辩论。

刘欣，国家一级播音员。1997年毕业于南京大学外国语学院英语系。1996年5月代表中国大学生首次参加在伦敦举办的国际英语演讲比赛，获得冠军。1997年8月进入中央电视台海外中心英语新闻栏目工作，先后担任编译、记者和主持人。
曾主持过多场大型直播节目，包括央视元旦晚会、北京奥运会倒记时２周年特别节目、２００８残奥会吉祥物发布仪式等。现在为中央电视台英语频道新闻节目主持人，日常直播的节目包括《环球了望》、《英语新闻》、《新闻一小时》和《今日亚洲》等。英语熟练，发音标准，曾多次任全国性英语演讲比赛的主持人和评委。持有法语高级资历证书。可用土耳其语对话。曾获奖项包括2001中国新闻政府奖。
刘欣曾在1996年代表南京大学参加首届“21世纪杯”全国大学生英语演讲比赛，获得冠军，首次捧起了“21世纪杯”。
在同年5月赴英国伦敦参加世界英语联合会（ESU）举办的世界公众演讲比赛（IPSC），再次夺冠。创下国内国际比赛首个“冠军大满贯”记录。

这篇演讲也成为二十多年来无数走在演讲道路上的中国青年们学习和研究的经典范本。
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, I think this is a perfect setting for my speech today, because we have a mirror right here. And this is the topic, the mirror and I.
I like to look into the mirror. When I was a little girl, I often stood on my toes, trying to find my face in the mirror of the dressing table, which was nearly as high as I was. Now I still like to look into the mirror. When I looked at it, I found the face of a young woman, glowing with maturity, confident in her future and still fascinated with her own reflection.
The fact I like to look into the mirror has to do with my granny, with whom I spent most of my childhood. I remember clearly that one night, I heard her memorying women can’t be seen. Women can’t be seen. I was so confused as I looked into the mirror the next morning to check if I could indeed see myself. Only now as a young woman myself can I understand it was not physical visibility that granny had in her mind.
Granny spent all her life taking care of the family, day-in and day-out. She cooked for her husband and ten children, but we never guess she and other female family members had to eat by the stove in the small kitchen. At family discussions, she was never asked for her opinion. When grandpa passed away, she had to listen to my uncle, her elder son, who became master of the house. Though years of toil, she fulfilled her duty as daughter, wife, and mother, yet as a person, she remained little noticed. If she had seen herself in the mirror of the dressing table, she was never visible in the mirror of society.
I have been living a different life. At home, I made decisions together with the rest of the family; in school, I take charge of various activities, the same as other boys and girls. Not only that, I can see something that granny could not have dreamed of, making decisions for my own future. I could choose from several competitive universities as I came out of high school. At university, I could choose from a range of subject, changing from English literature to business law. And upon graduation, I’m again faced with series of decisions, to further my study or to go to work; to stay in China or to go abroad; to get married right away, or to remain single for a bit longer. It does not matter whether or not I will become famous or rich. But I will treasure the chance to demonstrate my potentials into help other women demonstrate theirs as full member of the society, fully visible in the mirror of history. I will treasure it because the abundance of my choice that I enjoy can only after decades of efforts made by my granny, my mom, and millions of other Chinese women.
However, the choice to be made by me and the others of my generation is a great challenge. The misconception that men are superior to women is still dominating many people’s mind. While remaining courage to compete until certain themselves, we are expected to be quiet, loyal and obedient. This is not very different from what is expected of us as good wife and good mothers. The story of my grandmother and myself, mirrors the lives of millions of other women in China and perhaps in the world. Many of them still live the life of my grandmother, their worth is not yet recognized. It is then the responsibility of a young woman like me to study hard and work hard, so the two will see themselves, and we’ll be seen in the mirror of the society.
This is my dream. This dream I believe is not only shared by many of our grandmothers, mothers and sisters, but also by many of our fathers, brothers, husbands and male colleagues. It will not come true until everyone fully realizes that women can contribute to the society and should be guaranteed the right to. Women hold half the sky. Thank you.
在整理刘欣如何学习英语的过程中，米姐再次明白，英语学习的路上没有捷径，是几年乃至十几年的积累，同时顶尖高手都是本行业训练最刻苦的。下面让我们来看看刘欣的英语学习经历。
父亲是铁路安全工程师，学过俄语，却从没用过；母亲在一家造纸厂当了一辈子质检员。大姐是好学生的典范，以勤奋对待所有挑战，当然是百战不殆，如今早已移居加拿大。
在外企打拼的二姐也是英文极棒，还自学过日语，法语和德语，所以对哪路来的神仙都不怵，堪称在多语种间自由切换、游刃有余。
我是老小，两个姐姐开始学习英语的时候，我还没太开窍呢，只记得当年跟着她们一起看英语教学节目《Follow Me》（跟我学），当时这是唯一的电视英语教学节目，影响了一代人。

从初一开始我和大家一起开始念ABC，对英语的亲切感意味着我根本不用把她当成一门功课来学，上课的每一分钟都是享受，下课也不用多花时间去复习，因为老师讲的东西我已经听懂了，这样的良好的开端形成了一种巨大的动力。中学六年，我只有一次英语考试成绩低于90分。
我同时庆幸，我在最开始学习的时候遇到了非常出色的老师，他们给了我一个坚厚的基础。

我给自己定下的规矩是不管老师有没有要求，我都要将每一篇课文熟读成颂，我说到做到，几乎背下了中学六年学过的所有英语课文。
当时我并没有意识到背课文会有多大的用处，回想起来才发现无意间找到了一个事半功倍的捷径。
背诵课文的过程就像梳头发，从发根开始一个词、一句话的往下慢慢捋，等通顺了之后还需一遍一遍的反复梳理，直到梳子可以像洗发水广告里一样顺着发丝滑落，那时全篇文章也像流水一样从我的口中淙淙而出。
在这个过程中，每一个语言点都会被关注，被理解，直到完全变成自己的东西。有时会有不顺的地方，我也不会生拉硬扯，会先把它让过去，等全文通读了之后再回头看，有的时候会不解自通。
背诵课文的同时，单词的发音得到了练习，单词的拼写得到了巩固，句子的结构，动词变位，语法，时态等都得到反复的锤打，直到被完整地印在我的脑海中。
在考试的时候，我很快就能从脑海中的课文例句中找到相应的答案，而我对英语的感觉也在这日复一日的锤炼中越来越纯正，越来越敏锐。

那是在1987年到1993年，那个时代没有多少音像资料可选，也没有什么外语广播电视节目，只有电视上每周日播放的一部海外原版电影。
我当时总是在父母都睡了之后一个人守在电视机前，用报纸把屏幕下方的中文字幕贴上，为了不吵醒家人，我只能把音量开得低低的，站在电视机跟前仔细听每一句话，听不太懂也愿意陪在电视机前直到困得不行。
在江南小城镇江，没有什么外国人可以接触，当时也没有什么先进的学习工具，只有选择很少的原版卡带，CD机并不普遍，什么复读机MP3还没被发明呢。
我有幸得到了一盘叫“影子的房间”的歌曲磁带，是谁唱得已经记不得了，在家里的录音机上我把这盘磁带听了无数遍，直到可以把所有的歌背诵出来。
当时的录音机效果不太好，磁带盒里也没有附上歌词，所以我只能听清大概，“背”出来的歌当然也像是抽象派名画一样，只能在远处欣赏。有一天被放寒假回家的大姐听见了，她说你在唱什么呢？
我不好意思地给她看了那盘磁带，她觉得我很不可思议，什么都没懂，却唱得像模像样，那种调子和味道简直可以乱真！
要开出好的花朵就必须从选种做起。大一的精读课真的从音标开始，每一个人的发音都会被检阅一番，好地留下来，坏的捡出去，我的也不例外。
记得系里特别强调这样做的重要性，避免引起浪费时间的质疑。我受到过刘海平教授的批评，当然心里有所准备，不过我也同意这样做确实是太重要了。
学生来自全国各地，而各地的教学水平有所差异，在那个高考不考口语和听力的年代，书面的成绩实在不能反映出学生实际应用英语的能力，所以在开始任何深度学习之前有必要摸一下底，整齐一下队伍，这是磨刀不误砍柴工。
现在所有向我请教英语学习的人，都会得到同样的“治疗”过程，语音是口语的基础，没有一个好的基础，其他免谈。
不过这个过程却不是几节课的事。十几年之后，我仍然时常发现自己语音上的问题。
练习语音也是这样，每一个音标先得都清楚了，完全变成自己的东西之后，才能发现更细微的细节和差别。
整个过程有一点像人耳对于音乐的感知过程，你必须多听，仔细听，才能逐渐听出不同的音乐之间的不同韵味。
而这是一个很漫长的过程，决不是几个月能完成的任务。这也是我给每一个希望快速提高英语的朋友的建议：语法和单词量可以速成，但是语音和语调却急不来，因为语音的正确与否需要你的嘴部肌肉和舌头去适应一套全新的运动方式，功夫不到就是不行。
我最近在看甄立夫的一本《科学练声》，他引用了托尔斯泰《安娜·卡列尼娜》这部小说开篇的第一句话叫做“幸福的家庭家家相似，不幸的家庭各有不同”。所以他说练声是“正确的方法家家相似，错误的方法各有不同”。
每个将英语学到顶尖水平的方法和历程真的本质是相通的，但反之我国有太多的人曾经在英语学习路上努力过，奋战过，但最后还是放弃了，每个人有每个人不同的故事。
我在这也希望各个依然在英语路上前行的朋友们，无论如何不要放弃，同时多思考学习英语的本质到底是什么，自己的方法，时间，环境，基础，理念，态度是什么，和顶尖水平的人相比自己的优势在哪里，如何创造性地借鉴别人的经验，走出一条有自己特色的英语征服之路。
2018年1月22日，刘欣走进中国日报“新时代大讲堂”，贡献了另外一场精彩英文演讲，不仅赢得了现场观众的热烈掌声，同时这个演讲也注定激励更多的国人。她在演讲中说，“中国进入新时代——坚定了讲好中国故事的自信和底气。”
刘欣从挑战、机遇、责任（challenges, opportunities and responsibilities）三个方面入手，讲述了中国进入新时代，这对中国国际传播而言意味着什么，以及在新时代下需要面对和承担的责任与使命。
China has also been a scapegoat for some of the domestic policy failures of western countries. The loss of jobs in the US, for instance, has been squarely blamed on Chinese competition in the mainstream US media. Politicians then put unfair pressure on China in an effort to score domestic political gains, reinforcing the public's skepticism and misunderstanding about China.
中国也是一些西方国家国内政策失败的替罪羊。比如美国国内的失业问题被直接归咎于中国竞争，这影响了公众看法。政治家们借施压中国来谋求国内政治得分，也加深了公众对中国的怀疑和误解。
Now that China has defied all kinds of predictions of a regime collapse or an economic hard-landing, western observers and commentators are at a loss for words when trying to explain the China phenomenon.
现在，中国的发展使得各种政权崩溃或经济硬着陆的预言落空，西方观察家们和评论家们发现越来越难解释中国现象。
Traditionally, people have relied on a few correspondents or experts for information and opinions on China. Increasingly, however, that bottleneck is opening up.
过去，人们依靠少数一些记者或专家来了解中国。而现在，情况正在迅速变化。
Our role is not to oversell the Chinese wisdom; our responsibility is to document and explain that journey. Let history be our judges.
我们的使命，不是过分推销中国智慧，而是记录和诠释这段旅程。历史自有评说。
优秀的人身上总有很多值得我们学习的地方，其实，每个将英语学到顶尖水平的方法和历程真的本质是相通的。
