Scene 1: Calling for an appointment
Patient: I would like to make an appointment to see a doctor.
Office: OK, is this an emergency or an office visit?
Patient:
1. It is an emergency. I am bleeding. / I'm having problems breathing.
2. It is not anemergency. I feel sick. / I have a minor injury. / I am expeeriencing some pain.
Office: Can you explain your symptoms?
Patient:
1. Flu-like: I feel sick, very tired and rundown.
2. Headache or body ache: I have sharp pains. / I have constant body aches.
3. Stomach: My stomach hurts. It is a sharp pain. / It is very upset. / It aches and I have no appetite.
4. Minor injury: I cut my hand. / I hurt my shoulder lifting something heavy. / I strained my back while stretching.
Office:
1. Sickness: Do you have a fever or a cough?
2. Injury: Has the bleeding stopped? Can you move the injury part?
3. How long have you been feeling this way?
Scene 2: At the office
Typically, a nurse will perform triage after you check-in and before the doctor sees you.
Nurse: We will check your vitals first.
(Height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate, breathing and temperature)
Nurse: Please tell me why you are here today.
Nurse: Do you have any allergies to any medication?
Nurse: WHat medications are you currently taking?
Nurse: Do you have existing medical conditions? Have you had any recent hospitalizations or surgeries?
After triage, the doctor will evaluate, treat and prescribe.
Doctor: Please follow these directions.
Doctor: I am going to give you a prescription. Where would you like to have it filled?
Doctor: I am going to refer you to a specialist.
After discussion with the doctor, the nurse will discharge you.
Nurse: I am going to confirm the doctor's recommendations with you.
Nurse: We will follow up with you in 2-5 days.
Nurse: If your symptoms get worse, please call us immediately.
