It’s a big question to talk about gender differences in China, because China is a huge country withhuge population, with its 55 minorities and their own cultures, and with terrible economy drops between cities and rural areas and between coastal regions and inland west. Let me just say something about my hometown in Sichuan province. We are experiencing an era of big changes—reform, openings, fast economy growing and modernizing of social values. Traditional stereotypes regarding roles of men and women are fading away. Besides apparent physical gender differences (oh, should always be,) we feel amazed to see the more striking differences between women and men on their appearance, thanks to the varying fashionable dresses and make-ups. Men are still men while women are taking on more femininity. However, more femininity doesn’t mean less feminism. Now, more and more women are joining in competitions in schools, in public services and in careers, regardless gender differences. Feeling under pressures, men are going to share more house works, while still being expected to bring home more money.
