①No one suspected that there might be someone else on the farm who had never been seen.②This was indeed the case.③A short time ago, villagers were astonished to learn that the ghost of Endley had died.④Everyone went to the funeral, for the 'ghost' was none other thanEric Cox, a third brother who was supposed to have died as a young man.⑤After the funeral, Joe and Bob revealed a secret which they had kept for over fifty years.

【词汇精析】suspect /sə'spekt/:to think that something is probably true, especially something bad猜想,怀疑,觉得〔某事可能真实,尤指坏事〕,如:She strongly suspected he was lying to her.

suspect和doubt的区别:doubt:a feeling of being not sure whether something is true or right不确定,怀疑(感觉上怀疑,不知真实),如:There was still one little nagging doubt at the back of his mind. suspect:to think that something is probably true, especially something bad猜想,怀疑,觉得〔某事可能真实,尤指坏事〕,如:She strongly suspected he was lying to her.

none other than:不是别人正是……,如:It was none other than Professor Wu.

    as a young man:理解成“在年轻时”

    reveal a secret:透露/揭示一个秘密,keep a secret:保守一个秘密

After the funeral, Joe and Bob revealed a secret which they had kept for over fifty years.

①Eric had been the eldestson of the family, very much older than his two brothers.②He had been obliged to join the army during the Second World War.③As he hated army life, he decided todeserthis regiment.④When he learnt that he would be sent abroad, he returned to the farm and his father hid him until the end of the war.⑤Fearing the authorities, Eric remained in hiding after the war as well.⑥His father told everybody that Eric had been killed in action.⑦The only other people who knew the secret were Joe and Bob.⑧They did not even tell their wives.⑨When their father died, they thought it their duty to keep Eric in hiding.⑩All these years, Eric had lived as arecluse.⑪He used to sleep during the day and work at night, quite unaware of the fact that he had become the ghost of Endley.⑫When he died, however, his brothers found it impossible to keep the secret any longer.

She is older than I.她比我大。 She was my elder sister.

【语法小学堂】…very much older than his two brothers:形容词短语后置,相当于一个非限制性定语从句,则等于who was very much older than his two brothers。 Afraid of getting into the rain, he took the raincoat with him when he went out.

【写作推荐】be obliged to do sth.:不得不做某事,如:I felt obliged to explain my absence I told them the truth.

desert/dɪ'zɜːt/:If people or animals desert a place, they leave it and it becomes empty. Poor farmers are deserting their parched farm fields and coming here looking for jobs.

regiment /'redʒɪm(ə)nt/:a large group of soldiers, usually consisting of several battalions〔军队的〕团,如:The advance guards of the regiment were called in.

used to do sth.:过去经常/习惯于做某事,如:We used to sashay after supper.

    Summary writing:(last paragraph)

Eric joined the army during the Second World War, but hated army life, so he deserted. He returned to the farm where his father hid him until the end of the war, and he remained in hiding after the war. His father told everyone that he had been killed in action. Joe and Bob kept the secret, so Eric lived as a recluse. He slept during the day and worked at night, so he became the ‘ghost of Endley’.
