The Cannes Film Festival, as its name suggests, takes place in the luxurious, coastal, French city of Cannes.

Steeped in the breezy and refreshing early-summer sea air, the event usually lasts for 11 days throughout the second half of May.

Since it is extensively longer than a single ceremony, the festival features a broader array of activities,

ranging from carpet premieres and movie screenings to meetings, networking, and parties.

In its networking activities, for example, movie producers get to socialize with distributors from all over the world to promote their works,

look out for potential collaboration, and seek distribution of their films to other countries.

Round-table meetings are arranged for up-and-coming directors to engage in discussions about new directions that film, as an art and an industry, can take.

On this count, the Academy Awards ceremony is the culmination of a months-long award season, the conclusive summary of a competitive race among hundreds of movies produced in the past year.

The Cannes Film Festival, on the other hand, is larger in its scope than award presentations.

It's a little less about competition and a tad more about opening up dialogues.

The most significant award given at the Cannes Film Festival is the Golden Palm, the equivalent for the Best Picture award at the Oscars.

Still, to scoop an award in any category of the two events is a high honor.

For years, the Oscars have been bearing the full brunt of criticisms regarding the alleged bias in its results.

Some critics have argued that the Oscars voting committee only set their eyes on high-grossing films made in the US and ignore promising works produced by less well-known directors, let alone international films.

But I don't think that the criticisms detract too much from the credibility of the event.

For movie critics and the public, lobbing swipes has been a tradition in the history of such events,

and, if anything, critiques speak to people's enthusiasm in participating and are likely to nudge those events into welcome changes.

So, if you've exhausted all the films on your current wish list and are craving for some more high-quality, ground-breaking movies to watch,

take a stroll into the pantheon of winners at either the Oscars or Cannes. It'll be worth your time.
