The Aesop's Fables: The foolish

    It is a bright sunny morning. A man is loading a bundle of salt onto his Donkey. He is going to sell the salt at the market. The man is very excited. He hopes to get a good price for the salt. (load /ləʊd/ v. 装上,装载;bundle /ˈbʌnd(ə)l/ n. 束,捆,包;sell /sel/ v. 出售,售卖;salt /sɔːlt/ n. 盐,食盐;market /ˈmɑːkɪt/ n. 集市,市场;excited /ɪkˈsaɪtɪd/ adj. 激动的,兴奋的;hope /həʊp/ v. 希望;price /praɪs/ n. 价格)

Donkey: Hee-haw! Hee-haw!

Man: Stand still, Donkey! (still /stɪl/ adv. 静止地,不动地)

Donkey: (murmur) How heavy it will be! (heavy /ˈhevɪ/ adj. 重的,沉的)

Man: Don’t worry. It isn’t very heavy. (worry /ˈwʌri/ v. 担心,发愁) 

Donkey: (murmur) I don’t believe you. (believe /bɪˈliːv/ v. 相信)

               It is always heavy.

Man: Let’s go, Donkey!

    The two are on their way. The man is very happy, but the Donkey is not. The salt on his back is very heavy. (way /weɪ/ n.道路)

Man: Oh, what a beautiful morning!

          Look at the beautiful flowers.

          I shall sell the salt and buy some new shoes. (shall /ʃæl/ aux. 将要,将会,同I和we连用表示将来;shoes /ˈʃu:z/ n. 鞋子,shoe 的复数)

Donkey: What a terrible morning. (terrible /ˈterəb(ə)l/ adj. 糟糕的,令人极为不快的)

               The sun is shining and my back is heavy. (shining /ˈʃaɪnɪŋ/ v. 照耀)

               I am hot and tired. I want to rest.

Man: Let’s go fast, Donkey.

         I need some new shoes.

Donkey: I can’t go any faster.

               My legs are getting weak. (weak /wiːk/ adj. 虚弱的,无力的)

               Where is the market?

               Why is it so far away?

    The two keep walking. There is a stream ahead. They must cross it. (keep /kiːp/ v. 保持、处于,继续、重复;stream /striːm/ n. 小河,小溪;ahead /əˈhed/ adv. 在前面,朝前面;cross /krɒs/ n. 穿越,横渡) 

Man: We must cross that stream.

Donkey: Oh no! A stream!

               I am tired and weak. (weak /wiːk/ adj. 虚弱的,无力的)

               The stream will be hard to cross. (hard /hɑːd/ adj. 困难的)

Man: Don’t be worry, Donkey.

         It won’t be too hard. I will help you.

    The two are at the stream.

Man: Be careful, Donkey! Just follow me.

         Walk slowly step by step. (slowly /ˈsləʊli/ adv. 缓慢地,慢慢地;step /step/ n. 迈步,脚步)

Donkey: The rocks are very slippery. (rocks /rɒks/ n. 岩石礁石,rock 复数形式 ;slippery /ˈslɪpəri/ adj. 湿滑的,容易打滑的)

                What if I fall?  I am afraid. (fall /fɔːl/ v. 跌倒,倒塌;afraid /əˈfreɪd/ adj. 害怕的;担心的)

Man: Watch out, Donkey! (watch /wɒtʃ/ v. 当心,留意)

         It is very slippery here.

Donkey: Hee-haw!

    The Donkey slips and falls. It can’t get up. (slips /slɪps/ v. 滑倒,失足,slip 的第三人称单数)

Man: Oh, no! Get up, Donkey!

         Get up quickly!

         Get up before the salt melts! Now! (melts /melts/ v. 熔化,融化,melt 的第三人称单数形式)

Donkey: I can’t. I can’t get up.

               The rocks are slippery and my legs are weak.

Man: Come on! Get up at once! (once /wʌns/ adv. 一次, 一回;at once 马上,立刻)

    The man keeps pulling at the donkey, but it is no use. After a while the Donkey finally gets up and they cross the stream. (pulling /ˈpʊlɪŋ/ v. 拉;向某方向拖,pull的现在分词;while /waɪl/ n. 一段时间;finally /ˈfaɪnəli/ adv. 终于, 最后)

Man: Look! All the salt is gone. (gone /gɒn/ adj. 用完的、用光的,不复存在的)

         What shall I do? (shall /ʃæl; ʃəl/ aux.应,应该)

Donkey: Hey! My back is light. (light /laɪt/ adj.轻的,不重的)

               What happened? (happened /ˈhæpənd/ vi. 发生,happen 的过去式及过去分词)

               I fell in the stream and my back became light. (fell /fel/ 跌落、跌倒,fall 的过去式形式;became /bɪˈkeɪm/ v. 变得,become 的过去式)

               This is great! (great /ɡreɪt/ adv. 很好地,很棒地)

    However, the next day, the Master loads more salt onto the Donkey and heads for the market again. (however /haʊˈevə(r)/ adv. 然而,可是,不过;onto /ˈɒntə/ prep.到交通工具上;heads /hedz/ adj. 正面朝上的,heads for 前往,出发)

Man: Stand still.

         Today, I will load more salt.

Donkey: It is heavier than yesterday. (heavier /ˈhevɪəadj. 沉重的;than /ðæn; ðən/ conj.比,多于)

Man: let’s go quickly.

         I have to sell all of this salt today.

    Again, they come to the stream.

Donkey: I have an idea.

               I will fall down here on purpose. (purpose /ˈpɜːpəs/ v. 有意、打算,on purpose 故意地)

              Then my back will become light again.

Man: You better not fall down again, Donkey. (better /ˈbetə(r)/ adj. 较好的,更好的)

         Just follow me and be careful.

         One step at a time.

    This time, the rocks weren’t slippery at all, but the Donkey fell down on purpose. (at all 用于否定句的表示根本,究竟)

Donkey: Hee-haw.

Man: Be careful, not again. 

Donkey: Hee-haw., hee-haw.

Man:Come on, Donkey!

           Get up! Get up now!

    The man pulled at the Donkey, but it didn’t get up for a long time. Afterwards all of the salt was melted. (afterwards /ˈɑːftəwədz/ adv. 过后,后来)

Man: Oh my goodness!

         All of my salt is melted again!

         What shall I do?

Donkey: Heh, heh, heh.

               It worked again.

               I will keep falling down in the stream.

Man: I know what you are thinking, Donkey.

         You can’t trick me.

         I will teach you a lesson.

    Both the man and the Donkey had a grin on their faces. (grin /ɡrɪn/ v. 露齿而笑,咧着嘴笑)

    The next day, the man loaded the Donkey’s back again.

Man: Come here, Donkey.

         We are going to the market again.

         This is very light.

Donkey: Hey, he is right this time.

               This is light.

               But it will become even lighter later. (even /ˈiːv(ə)n/ adv. 更加,愈加)

               Heh, heh, heh.

    After a while, the two reach the stream once again. (reach /riːtʃ/ v. 到达,抵达;once again  再一次)

Man: There’s the stream.

         Don’t fall down again today.

         If you do, you will be sorry. (sorry /ˈsɒri/ adj. 后悔的,懊悔的)

Donkey: I don’t believe you.

               I will fall down on purpose again.

               Then my back will become even lighter.

Donkey: Hee-haw.

    This time, the Master didn’t help the Donkey get up. Instead, after a while, the Donkey tried to get up by itself.  (instead /ɪnˈsted/ adv. 代替,顶替,反而)

Donkey: I will get up now.

               Hey! What is wrong?

               I can’t get up. My back is so heavy.

Man: Get up, you foolish Donkey!

Donkey: Why is my back so heavy?

               I don’t understand.

Man: Poor Donkey! (poor /pɔː(r); pʊə(r)/ adj. 贫穷的,可怜的、不幸的)

         Plain cotton is light. (plain /pleɪn/ adj. 单纯的,不掺杂的;cotton /ˈkɒtn/ n. 棉,棉花)

         But wet cotton is very heavy. (wet /wet/ adj. 湿的,潮湿的)

Donkey: Oh, I didn’t know.

               I shouldn’t have fooled my Master. (fooled /fuːld/ v. 愚弄,戏谑,fool 的过去式及过去分词)

Man:Come on, Donkey! Let’s go!

          The market is still far away.

          We have a long way to go.

Donkey: Oh nooooooo!


MORAL:Don’t fall for one’s own tricks. (fall /fɔːl/ v. 降临,发生)
