    Day4

    1.elliptical(adj):pertaining to or having the form of an ellipse./ tending to be ambiguous, cryptic, or obscure:

    Synonyms: ambiguous, obscure, rounded

    2. take up: 拿起,开始,从事,吸取,接纳,(原文是采取...的状态的意思)

    3.stub(n/v):   n/ a short remaining piece, as of a pencil, candle, or cigar

                        v/ to dig up by the roots

                        synonyms: butt, root

                        e.g: I felt there were a lot of ways that I could spend the stub end of my life cycle that were more productive

                       other forms: stub out : 熄烟

    4.crest(n/v) : n/ the highest part of a hill or mountain range; summit

                         v/ to reach the crest or summit of


                        synonyms: peak, reage, head, apex

                        e.g: So busy we didn't notice that the crest of that lovely hill we were climbing was actually a cliff.

    5. infrared(n/adj): the part of the invisible spectrum that is contiguous to the red end of the visible spectrum and that comprises electromagnetic radiation of wavelengths from 800 nm to 1 mm.(红外线的)

                  e.g: Therefore, it is not possible for any F-35 schedule to include a video data link  or infrared pointer at this point.

    6.postulate(n/v) :v/  to claim or assume the existence or truth of, especially as a basis for reasoning or arguing; to assume without proof, or as self-evident; take for granted.

                             n/something taken as self-evident or assumed without proof as a basis for reasoning.

                             e.g: Even people who postulate a creative God usually acknowledge that his existence shifts the big question rather than resolving it.

                            synonyms:  hypothesis,presuppose

    7.velocity(n):rapidity of motion or operation; swiftness; speed(速率)

                       synonyms: speed, tempo,pace

                          e.g: The velocity and density of everything just boggles my mind.

    8.cesium(n) :a rare, highly reactive, soft, metallic element of the alkali metal group(铯)

                    e.g: Even at the Chernobyl meltdown in 1986, he pointed out, cesium and iodine were the problem.

    9.patch (n/v):n/ a small piece of material used to mend a tear or break, to cover a hole, or to strengthen a weak place

                           v/  to repair or restore, especially in a hasty or makeshift way

                         synonyms: fix, mend

                        e.g:Then we had to stop up the holes with anything we had, and patch the paper as best we could.

    10. alpha centauri: (南门二):南门二(α Cen、半人马座α)位于天空南方的半人马座,英文名Alpha Centauri或Toliman,虽然肉眼分辨不出来,不过南门二实际上是一个三合星系统,其中一颗恒星是全天空第4明亮的恒星。不过因为其中两颗恒星距离过近,肉眼无法分辨出来,所以它们的综合视星等为-0.27等(超过第3亮的大角星),绝对星等为4.4等。南门二也作为南十字星座最外围的指引而闻名,因为南十字星座的位置太过南边,所以大部分的北半球都看不到。传闻当年郑和下西洋,就是用它来指引方向。

    11.diagonal(n/adj/v):v/ extending from one edge of a solid figure to an opposite edge, as a plane  /   having oblique lines, ridges, markings

                      e.g:  The young man weaves through clusters of bamboo and cuts a diagonal slash into a tree, positioning a hollow log at the end.

    15.warp(n/v) :v/  to bend or twist out of shape, especially from a straight or flat form

                        synonyms: turn, distort, contort

    16.ionic(adj)—ion(n): one of the electrically charged particles formed in a gas by electric discharge or the like.(离子)

    17.arena(n):a central stage, ring, area, or the like, used for sports or other forms of entertainment, surrounded by seats for spectators(竞技场)

                   synonyms: square, stage, gym, park

                  e.g: Most of their fans filed out of the arena quietly

    18.curvature(n):  the act of curving or the state of being curved.

                           synonyms: bend, bow, round

                           e.g:Even if you put it on a big building, the curvature of the earth prevents radar from going to the airplane.

    Day5

    1. assign(n/v) :v/ to give or allocate; to give out or announce as a task

                       synonyms: allot, allocate

                      e.g: White House officials often assign to President Obama a series of sports metaphors.

                     other forms:assignee: 代理人,受让人

    2. snapshot(n/v) : n/  an informal photograph, especially one taken quickly by a handheld camera.

                                v/  to take a snapshot of

                                synonyms: image,cartoon

     e.g: At any given medical evaluation you get no more than a snapshot

    3.hail(n/v) :  v/ to cheer, salute, or greet/ to call out to in order to stop, attract attention, ask aid

                         n/ a shout or call to attract attention / the act of hailing

                       synonyms :  cheer, applaud, honor, exalt, laud, extol

                      e.g: Why call a taxi when you can hail a Lyft to pick up visiting family and friends?

    4. at rest : 表示静止状态

    5.ripple:v/  (of a liquid surface) to form small waves or undulations, as water agitated by a breeze

                     (of a solid surface) to form or have small undulations, ruffles, or folds.

                    (of sound) to undulate or rise and fall in tone, inflection, or magnitude

                   n/  a small wave or undulation, as on water.

                   synonyms  :    wave, undulate, purl(潺潺地流),ruffle, curl(蜷缩)

                  e.g: Sansing also said that there has been a ripple effect in that "once one celebrity talks about it, others feel more comfortable."

    Day 7 笔记整理哈哈(到了我最喜欢的部分啦,虽然我物理看不懂,但是我来学到一些单词与表达也算是极好滴,嘿嘿)

    1.force:力,impulse:冲动(力),momentum:动量=质*速

    2. speed:表示物理速度,rate:比率(工资)

    3.let  go  of: 放走  

    4.drop:垂直下降(金融学中的数据等)

    5.act on it :作用于它  

    例子:sit in for the exam:参加考试

    6.what happens to a body when a force does act on it is given by Newton's second law

      解析:what... act on it 为主语从句,当中还有一个when做body的时间状语从句,谓语动词是be 动词is,后面接被动语态

    7.be proportional to sth : 成正比/ be inversely proportionally to sth 成反比

    8. preferred state of rest :最理想的状态,更容易出现的状态

    9.take up:   进入/采取...的状态

    10.it follows from sth : 从.... 中推出结论。

    11.be hold : 成立=be true / stand up

    12.stub one's toe on a large stone:踢石头却反伤了自己的脚趾,表示极度的愤恨

        stub out: 表示熄烟

    13.finite:有限的

    14.evenly space :均匀分布

    15.the theory of the propagation of light:光线传播规律

    16.normal mass:静止/正常 质量

    17.speed it up:加速

    18.chop it :砍一下 / chop it up: 一直砍

    19.object:侧重对象,body:形状,质量

    20.put an end to ...: 结束

    21.measure of time : 测量时间的方式

      例子:by any measure   无论怎样

    22.in terms of : 以/ 就...而言

        例子: we are on good terms:我们关系很好

    23.the line joining the moon to the sun : joining 可替换成connecting

    24. arbitrary:没理由的,武断的

    25.difference/distinction:前者通用,后者表示性质不同,更加正式

    26.diagram: 示意图/  flowchart:流程图

    27.lie in: 存在于

    28.go out: 熄灭
