What is puppetry

Puppetry is a very ancient form of theatre which was first recorded in the 5th century BC in Ancient Greece. Some forms of puppetry may have originated as long ago as 3000 years BC. Puppetry takes many forms, but they all share the process of animating inanimate performing objects to tell a story.

Puppetry is a form of theatre or performance that involves the manipulation of puppets – inanimate objects, often resembling some type of human or animal figure, that are animated or manipulated by a human called a puppeteer. Such a performance is also known as a puppet production.

Puppeteers use movements from hands and arms to control devices such as rods or strings to move the body, head, limbs, and in some cases the mouth and eyes of the puppet. The puppeteer sometimes speaks in the voice of the character of the puppet, while at other times they perform to a recorded soundtrack.

The script for a puppet production is called a puppet play.

There are many different varieties of puppets

Finger puppet

The simplest puppets

are finger puppets, which are tiny puppets that fit onto a single finger.

Sock puppet

Sock puppets which are formed from a sock and operated by inserting one's hand inside the sock, with the opening and closing of the hand simulating the movement of the puppet's "mouth".

Table-top puppet

Table-top puppet is easy to carry, it almost small and perform by holding puppet hands and feet. Most pieces of stuff in our daily life can be the props in this puppet show.

Hand puppet

There are different types of hand puppet, some are small and some are as big as a person. A hand puppet is controlled by one hand which occupies the interior of the puppet and moves the puppet around. Some big hand puppet also needs to control by hardwire rods.

Here I will introduce an original children's puppet show --Little Blublue

This is a story about a little blue penguin which is living at the Pilot beach in Dunedin. He is a young blue penguin BluBlue who has just go through moulting, where their baby feathers are pushed out and replaced by new blue feathers. In this show, we will follow Blublue to explore the vast ocean.

The idea of the project is from a trip to the South Island. During the journey, the coastal of Oamaru, South Island, New Zealand, and the habitat of the little blue penguin is surrounded by mountains and sea, and it is very magnificent. The tide of the sea rises and falls and the little blue penguins prey on the sea after sunrise.

The little penguin is the smallest species of penguin. It grows to an average of 33 cm (13 in) in height and 43 cm (17 in) in length, though specific measurements vary by subspecies. It is found on the coastlines of southern Australia and New Zealand, with possible records from Chile. In Australia, they are often called fairy penguins because of their small size. In New Zealand, they are more commonly known as little blue penguins or blue penguins owing to their slate-blue plumage; they are also known by their Māori name: kororā.

I chose to tell this story in the form of a puppet show because the character costume can be designed very cartoon, and the fluffy fabric is easier for children to accept than the big human puppet. At the same time, I changed the traditional puppetry form into an easier way, then children can participate in the performance after they complete the puppet training courses.

In the field of children’s education, simple puppet (such as sock puppet) should be a grateful auxiliary tool and hand puppets can be different shapes and tell different stories. It can not only build up kids craft ability and self-expression, but also suitable for the family to play together.

I hope that through this performance, this ancient form can be developed with a new look, and connect with the New Zealand local creatures, the social phenomena and scientific common sense will be express to the children easily and interestingly.

Finally, at the end of 2020, I hope I can do a new version of the Little Blue Penguin Puppet Show in English for the first time in Auckland. Before that, let’s take a peek behind the scenes.
