The Prince continued speaking. “Far,far away,there is a poor house in a little street.One of the windows is open, and through it I can see a woman sitting at a table. Her face looks old and tired, and her hands are rough and red from sewing, all day long. She is sewing a beautiful dress for the Queen’s next dance. In the corner of the room, her little boy is lying sick in bed.He has a fever, and is asking for oranges. His mother has nothing to give hime but river water, so he is crying. Swallow,Swallow,little Swallow,will you please bring her the ruby from my sword? My feet are nailed to this column and I cannot move."

“Swallow,Swallow,little Swallow,”said the Prince, “will you please stay with me for one more night, and take my ruby to the woman?The boy is so thirsty, and his mother is so sad.”
“I don’t think I like boys,”answered the Swallow. “Last summer, when I was staying on the river, there were two boys there. They were very rude, and were always throwing stones at me. They never hit me, of course, because I was too fast for them. Still, it was a very rude thing for them to do.”
But the Happy Prince looked so sad that the little Swallow felt sorry for him. “It is very cold here,” he said. “Still, I will stay with you for one night, and bring your ruby to the woman.”
“Thank you, little Swallow,”said the Prince.

So the Swallow pulled out the great ruby from the Prince’s sword, and flew away with it in his beak over the roofs of the town.
He flew over the top of the church tower where he saw some beautiful angels made of stone. He passed by the palace and heard the sound of dancing. A beautiful girl came out into the garden with her lover. “How wonderful the stars are,” she said, “and how wonderful is the power of love!”
“I hope my dress will be ready in time for the Queen’s dance,” she thought. “It has to be perfect, but the woman who is making it is so lazy.”
At last, he came to the poor house and looked in. The boy was rolling back and forth feverishly on his bed, and the mother had fallen asleep, because she was so tired. The Swallow flew in, and set the great ruby down on the table beside the woman. Then he flew gently around the bed, fanning the boy with his wings. “How cool I feel,” said the boy. “I must be getting better.” Then the boy fell into a deep sleep.

The Swallow flew back to the Happy Prince, and told him what he had done. “It is strange,” he said, “but I feel quite warm now, although it is so cold.”
“That is because you have done a good thing,” said the Prince. The little Swallow began to think about what the Happy Prince had said, and then he fell asleep. Thinking always made him sleepy.
