So he pulled out the Prince's other eye,and carried it down street.He flew past the little girl,and dropped the sapphire into her hand."What a lovely piece of glass!"said the little girl,and she ran home,laughing.
Then the Swallow came back to the Prince."You are blind now,"he said,"so I will stay with you always."
因此他抠出王子的另一只眼睛，带着他飞往了街道。他从小女孩头顶飞过，并且将蓝宝石丢到了她的手中。“好可爱的一片玻璃啊！”小女孩说，然后她大笑着跑回了家。
燕子回到了王子身边。“现在你失明了，”他说，“所以，我会一直陪着你。”
"No,little Swallow,"said the Prince,"you must go away to Egypt."
"I will stay with you always,"said the Swallow,and he slept at the Prince's feet.
“不，小燕子,”王子说，“你必须离开去埃及。”
“我将一直陪着你，”燕子说，然后他在王子的双脚之间睡着了。
All the next day he sat on the Prince's shoulder,and told him stories of what he had seen in strange lands.He told him about the long-legged red birds,the catch goldfish in their beaks along the Nile River.He told him about the men in the desert,who walk slowly by the side of their camels,and carry strings of beads in their hands.And he told him about the Great Pyramids,those stone buildings where the ancient Kings of Egypt are buried in painted coffins.
接下来的每一天，他都站在王子的肩膀上，告诉王子他在陌生土地上看到的所有故事。他告诉王子尼罗河岸边一种长腿的鸟，他们用嘴去抓鱼。他告诉王子沙漠中的人类，他们慢慢地走在骆驼的身边，在他们的手里拿着一串珠子。他告诉王子金字塔的故事，这些石头建筑是用来放置古埃及国王的棺材的地方。
"Dear little Swallow,"said the Prince,"you tell me of extraordinary things,but more extraordinary than anything is the suffering of men and of women.Fly over my city,little Swallow,and tell me what you see there."
"亲爱的小燕子，"王子说，“你告诉了我许多非同寻常的事情，但是人们所受的痛苦去更加重要。小燕子，从我的城市飞过，告诉我你看到了什么。”
So the Swallow flew over the great city,and saw the rich enjoying themselves in their beautiful houses,while the poor were living in the streets.He flew along dark roads,and saw the white faces of starving children.Under a bridge two little boys were lying in each other's arms to try and keep themselves warm."How hungry we are!"they said.
燕子飞过这个大城市，看到富人们在自己漂亮的房子里享受，而穷人们却在街上露宿。他飞过黑暗的马路，看到了挨饿孩子苍白的脸。桥底下，两个孩子紧紧抱在一起试图取暖。“我们好饿啊！”他们说。
“You must not lie there,”shouted a policeman,and they went out into the rain.
Then the Swallow flew back and told the Prince what he had seen.
"你们不许躺在这里，"一个警察叫道，他们只能跑进雨里。
燕子飞了回来，告诉了王子他所看到的一切。
"I am covered with fine gold,"said the Prince."You must take it off,piece by piece,and give it to the poor of my city.The living always think that gold can make them happy."
"我全身被金子覆盖，"王子说，“你把它们一片片取下来，把它送给这个城市穷苦的人们，活着的人们总认为黄金能使他们快乐。”
The Swallow pulled off the fine gold piece by piece,until the Happy Prince looked dull and grey.Every time the Swallow brought a piece of gold to the poor,the children looked happier and happier,and they laughed and played games in the street."We can buy bread now!"they said.
燕子将黄金一片片取下，直到幸福王子看起来阴沉而灰暗。每次，燕子将一片黄金送给穷人的时候，孩子们也就越来越开心，他们高兴大笑，一起在街上玩游戏。“我们能买面包了！”他们说。
Then the snow came,and after the snow came the frost.The streets looked as if they were made of bright and shining silver.Long icicles hung down under the roofs of the houses,and everybody wore warm coats.The little boys wore red hats and skated on the ice.
大雪来了，之后是霜冻。所有的街道看上去银装素裹，长长的冰凌悬挂在屋檐下，每个人都穿上了厚厚的外套。小孩子们带着红色的帽子在冰上溜冰玩。
The poor little Swallow grew colder and colder,but he would not leave the Prince,because he loved him too much.He picked up pieces of bread outside the baker's door when the baker was not looking,and tried to keep himself warm by flapping his wings.
可怜的燕子越来越冷了，但是他不会离开王子，因为他太爱他了。当面包师不注意的时候，他会在面包店门外叼起一片面包，试图通过不停拍打翅膀来维持身体温暖。
But at last he knew that he was going to die.He had just enough strength to fly up to the Prince's shoulder once more."Goodbye,dear Prince!"he said."Will you let me kiss your hand?"
但是最后他知道自己就要死了。他用尽所有力气再一次飞上了王子的肩膀。“再见了我亲爱的王子，”他说，“能让我吻一吻你的手吗？”
"I am glad that you are going to Egypt at last,little Swallow,"said the Prince."You have stayed too long there,but you must kiss me on the lips,because I love you."
“你能飞往埃及我很高兴，小燕子”，王子说。“你已经在这儿待了太久了，但是你必须吻我的嘴唇，因为我爱你！”
"I am not going to Egypt,"said the Swallow,"I am going to die.Death is the brother of Sleep,is he not?"
And he kissed the Happy Prince on the lips,and fell down dead at his feet.
“我不是去埃及，”燕子说，“我就要死了。死亡和长眠总是常伴的，不是吗？”
他吻了王子的唇，掉落在了王子的双脚上面死去了。
