如同象棋大师，优秀医生在诊病时表现出的在医学上综合、全面、快速又高效的心理表征也并非一蹴而就，而是在长期的学习和探索相关的刻意练习中积累的。普通人也一样，学习的每一个脚步都是我们刻意练习的过程，同时也依靠我们的心理表征来完成这个过程。学习需要知识，知识服务于更深层的学习。所以说，刻意练习既产生有效的心理表征，又依靠有效的心理表征。

在体育领域中有一种良性循环：磨砺了技能可以改善心理表征；而改变心理表征也有助于磨砺技能。人们在做动作的过程中建立觉知，同时依靠觉知来引导动作的完成。也就是说，技能与心理表征之间的关系是一个良性循环：技能越娴熟，创建的心理表征就越好；而心理表征越好，就越能有效地练习以磨练技能。
