Part 3 Summary
The wars in Kabul worsen. Kabul was no longer a safe place for people living there and bodies were found every day. Hardly did Laila come out the house unless she was accompanied by Tariq, who had bought a gun so as to protect Laila. Babi tried to convince Mammy to leave Kabul but was refused again. Babi had no choice but teach Laila himself at home for her safety. Gigi, Laila's friend, was killed in a rocket attack.
Many of Laila's neighbors fled to other places for safety, including Tariq and his parents. The day before Tariq left, he pleaded Laila to go with him and promised to marry her, a wish Laila had had for many years in the bottom of her heart. Thinking of her uncompromising mother and her father, Laila could not wipe away the obligations of her life and refused Tariq's pleadings. She had to make Tariq leave.
Laila's parents kept talking every day while Laila was relishing the memory with Tariq. Mammy finally agreed to leave Kabul with them, making both Babi and Laila excitedly. Lying in bed, Laila pictured the happy life with Tariq in a safe and beautiful city, which Babi had depicted to her. They set about packing their necessary luggage and disposing of their useless items. Unfortunately, another rocket attack broke out, leaving Laila's parents dead and her badly injured.
Having been rescued from beneath the rubble by Rasheed, Laila almost lost her consciousness. Under Mariam's meticulous care, Laila gradually recovered from her bad injuries. Laila constantly tortured herself with the regret and guilt and hungered for some encouragement and moral wisdom passed on by Mariam. But it turned out Mariam could give nothing to Laila.
Part 4 随感
Gigi's mother, had run up and down the street where Giti was killed, collecting pieces of her daughter's flesh in an apron, screeching hysterically. Gigi's decomposing right foot, still in its nylon sock and purple sneaker, would be found on a rooftop two weeks later.
