Thanks to the development of internet technology, the majority of people’s day-to-day routine have gone online. In my opinion, this new high-tech trend has both benefits and drawbacks for single person and the community. In the following, I’d like to examine both views and put forward my own position.

On the one hand, internet technology has made people’s life more convenient and productive. For instance, we used to go to the supermarket do our shopping yet now we can buy almost anything online at preferential price and thus save ourselves a plenty of time, money and energy. Besides, nowadays we can also do a lot of our work at home, such as sending emails, discussing business problems or conducting trade transactions so on and so forth. In this way, we could enjoy a great deal of flexibility and efficiency because we can cope with our job commitment whenever and wherever we can and at our own rhythm.

On the other hand, unfortunately digital interaction also creates a multitude of downsides to us netizens. To begin with, it makes people’s distance wider by literally depriving them of real face-to-face exchange. Lacking sincere eye-contact, warm handshake or other essential physical cues in front of our interlocutors, the bond of people is found very hard to deepen and the trust of people is also very thorny to build up.
What’s more, digital interaction tend to worsen people’s relationship with their beloved family members or next door neighbors because they seem to linger longer online with total strangers who follow them in their cyber sphere and ignor their real relatives or friends in their real life. There is a catch phrase these days which is to the effect that the longest distance is not between earth and sky but between you who are online and me who is not. I consider this saying discloses the dark truth of virtual communication in a very profound manner and provides us with a lot of food for thoughts.

To conclude, virtual communication is just like a double-edged sword which has both pros and cons for us individual person and the society as a whole. What we should do is to carefully guard against its harmful side effects like growing isolation, alienation and indifference of people with each other and at the same time take full advantages of its upsides to best satisfy people’s need and serve the progress of society.
