Jiahe’s 3rd one in 2021
This story comes out of <Stories of Shakespeare’s Comedies>. To be honest, I can’t have the ability to enjoy this masterpiece. Because in some certain event, I thought it is a kind of mischief.
Therefore I still have a long distance to learn English for somehow I couldn’t get what the point is.
Anyway, let’s get started. There are three lines inside the story. One line is about the marriage of two Athen couples, one is about a play acted by a group of working men, the last one is a myth.
Theseus who is a Duke of Athens, will marry the Queen of the Amazon - Hippolyta. When they discussed the entertainment for their wedding, they were interrupted by Egeus, a rich and important man of Athens. At the same time Egeus was followed by his daughter Hermia and two young men, Demetrius and Lysander.
Egeus complained to Theseus," Greater ruler Theseus, my daughter Hermia , refuses to marry Demetrius, the young man I have chosen for her. Instead, she wants to marry another young man , Lysander, who has given her romantic idea." Theseus replied," Hermia, you should follow your father’s opinion, as a daughter of your father, you should place your future in your father’s hand. I will give my judgement, either you must marry the man your father chooses, or die, or live like a nun and never see a man again. Think it over, and decide before my and Hippolyta’s wedding day."
Demetrius and Hermia don’t want obey Theseus’s order, instead they planned to run out of Athen, and live in Lysander’s aunt’s house in another city. And their first step is hiding in the forest at night. However, Hermia told Helena their escape idea. Helena loved Demetrius very much, but there’s only Hermia in Demetrius’s eyes. So Helena thought over and over, decided to tell Demetrius Hermia’s escape plan. Therefore the four young Athens came into the forest at that night with moon hanging the sky.
At this time fairies were still commonly seen in the wood of Europe. By their magic power, they could control love and fertility, both among humans and in the natural world. Oberon and Titania were the King and Queen of the fairies. For many days they had constantly been arguing, as some married couples will do even today. Whenever they met, the other fairies were afraid and tried to keep out their way as much as they could. One day after their quarrel, Oberon was way angry, and he had a plan to get revenge on Titania. So he required Puck, one of his fairy attendants, to fetch a small and white flower named as Love-in-Idleness. If the juice of that flower drops onto the eyes of a sleeping man or woman, they will fall in love with the first creature that they see.
Before he got the juice of that flower, Oberon walked into the forest, and found that Helena chased Demetrius, but Demetrius was annoyed by Helena’s behavior. He tried to escape from Helena. Helena tried to win the love from Demetrius.
Oberon definitely wanted to help Helena, so he asked Puck to drop the juice onto Demetrius’s eyes, and make sure Helena was his first creature to see. But Puck was a naughty man, he always made mistakes and played the bad games with his tasks. He dropped the juice onto Lysander and Demetrius’s eyes. And make the two young Athens love Helena together. Helena thought Hermia, Lysander and Demetrius were playing a trick with her. Hermia thought Lysander was crazy about that. Everyone lost their minds .
Until morning coming, Theseus and Hippolyta haunted in the forest. They encountered four young people. Due to Lysander and Hermia’s escape plan, they should been put into prison. At that time, Oberon realized Puck’s mistakes, and undone the magic for Lysander. Then Hermia would marry with Lysander, and Helena would marry with Demetrius. Happy ending.
When we talk back to Titania side. We can see Puck dropped the juice onto her eyes, and when she woke up, she fall in love with a donkey. I mean he is a human with a donkey face. Actually he is one of the working actors. All the working actors should have rehearsal in the forest last night, but Puck make him become a donkey head, then the rest were scared to run. He was left and beloved by Titania.
Once Oberon saw Titania hold a donkey as a lover, he can’t help undoing this magic for her. Titania felt that’s a terrible dream, but started to cherish Oberon’s love again. Their relationship was mended very well.
In the last act, everyone joined Theseus and Hippolyta’s wedding, even the working actors. Despite their play was so bad that nobody get what they really want to delivery. They got the rewards from Theseus.
Every line gets a happy ending. Though there are some ridiculous parts involved, and a lot of characters who are totally new for me. Still think this is a book need to re-read again and again. Perhaps time flying, and language skills improving, I may get more from that. But sooner would be better.
