    Lost

It was very dark, dark except for the pair of glowing red eyes staring at me and coming closer and closer every second. Something touched my face and I woke up with a start. It was only a piece of kelp. I looked at the clock and the time surprised me, it was only 8:05 am. I had a busy day yesterday and it was impossible that I could get up this early because I went to bed at nearly 12 o’clock. I got out of the uncomfortable bed and looked at it unhappily. The mattress and pillow were made of seasponge and the blankets, if they were blankets, were made of kelp. I really hated the fact that the resources were limited because the city was under the sea. I couldn’t believe my mother moved here because she wanted to ‘experience the feeling of living under the sea'. The only things here were seaweed, fish, many other sea animals and plants, and a lot of salty water.

After I ate breakfast (which was horrible, and even more unpleasant when my mother claimed it ‘absolutely delightful’), I got ready to explore the city. I was very excited about it, even though I wouldn’t like the idea of living here. In the meantime, my mother would stay home and do everything we need to ‘settle in’. I got out of the house and walked around, looking at everything for the rest of the morning. The city was very similar to a city on land but very different also. The buildings and many other things looked the same except for the materials they were made of. It had a glass dome over it and it was located in a valley with low hills covered with kelp forests.

After I got my diving equipment ready, I went out of the dome and into a kelp forest with a lantern to light the way. It cast a bright, flickering light over my surroundings. The deeper I traveled into the forest, the darker it was. My nightmare came back to me and I shivered. An electric eel appeared and bumped into me. I fell down, shocked, and accidentally cut my arm on a sharp piece of rock. I immediately wrapped it up with a kelp because I didn’t want to attract sharks. I turned around to get out of the forest and swam for a long time.

Hours went by, and I came back to the place where I cut my arm. I'd been going in circles all that time!  I set off in a different direction and ended up with the same result. Great, I was lost!

Suddenly, a shark appeared, and then another, and then two more. Then a mermaid appeared with a spear in her hand. She had golden hair and a silver tail. She lowered the weapon and said something to the sharks. They backed away.

“Sorry,” she said before I could even open my mouth, “I’m only hunting. The sharks are tame and would only attack if I command it. They have really bad eyesight and they try to catch anything that moves and smells like blood.” She glanced at my cut.

“It’s okay,” I replied, “Do you know the direction to the dome city? I’m lost.”

Her eyes widened, “You mean the human city? I’ve always wanted to see that place! I know which direction it is, although we are forbidden to reveal ourselves to humans on purpose.”

“Could you lead the way? I keep going in circles.” I asked her.

“Does that mean I could see the city? Ooh, I’m so thrilled, of course I can’t reveal myself, but I could see it and go near it. I’ll be the first mermaid to see it!  And I’m going to…”

She was so excited that she kept speaking enthusiastically until I said, “Do you want to see the city or stay here and keep talking?!” That shut her up.

She led me in the same direction I first went after I cut myself except that she didn’t go in circles, and in only half an hour, I saw the kelp starting to thin out until I saw the city. The mermaid was so eager that she almost fell down. She ran her hand through her hair even though she wasn’t allowed to show herself. When she saw the city, she gasped and turned away.

“I must tell everyone about what I saw! I must go at once!” She exclaimed.

“Wait,” I said, “What is your name?”

“Pearl,”she replied hastily, “I must go!” And she disappeared with her sharks.

When I arrived home, my mother looked at me and told me that ‘I am in a terrible state’ and ‘you must have had a delightful adventure, don't worry about that cut, dear’. I told her that I decided that I would stay here after all.
